Event SIX: Massey/Wellington High School, 7 Dec 06

Bouncing back from illness, Ross Morrison screamed around the Massey/Wgtn High campus tonight over a minute clear of Bill Edwards, who also picked up a penalty minute. Series challenger Bryn Davies was two minutes off the pace, although without penalty he finished 1sec ahead of Edwards. As a result Morrison picks up the $100 prize pool, which he was in danger of having to share with Davies.

Piret Klade won the womens race by 90 seconds from Gillian Ingham, but the $80 womens prize was already safe in the hands of Lizzie Ingham, who planned the course with yet another innovation. After two split loops of the inner city high school, former dominion museum, and polytech labyrinth, competitors faced a common loop with a difference - dummy controls in close proximity, with a penalty for wrong clips.

This follows the TV-friendly proposal for the last world champs middle distance, in which mis-clipping was going to be identified electronically and competitors required to run extra distance. In the end it didn't happen, but its been used in Scandinavia and is likely to resurface. It fitted ideally onto the new campus map which at 1:2500 showed building nooks and crannies, stairs and underpasses. Three quarters of the field got through "clean", but 7 incurred a one-minute penalty at one of the three controls with dummies nearby.

Just behind the top five men NZO Editor Mick Finn led the vets, though John Robertson already had the biggest purse (close to $150) in his hands. Likewise son Tim will receive the boys prize, though with a penalty minute he didn't enjoy his usual lead - Andrew Glover and Thomas Robinson were within 40 seconds. And daughter Laura had won the girls class. With the final severely reduced by the Chilton St James awards night, Amy Wild took the final win.

The tenth O-Max series produced two new venues and a continuing supply of course innovations - and near-record fields.

Event FIVE: California-Harcourt Park - 29 Nov 06

After last night's race, both Bryn Davies and Piret Klade seemed to keep their chances alive of catching the open leaders. But Bill Edwards introduced a new feature - six memory controls, with a time penalty for missing. No-one chose to deliberately pass up a control, but when he checked the cards there were a number of wrong clips. And though Klade had run 46sec faster than Lizzie Ingham, the penalty took away her win, and the chance of catching in next week's final.

Davies was clean, and posted a 2-min win over series leader Ross Morrison, second in spite of being unwell. Another win next week would see them tie on points. Davies narrowly won last year.

The vets class was robbed of some interest when Malcolm Ingham, who developed a calf problem in last week's race, decided not to run. That took the pressure off John Robertson, who cruised round the 6-memory, 2-loop micr-o, 5-control final loop course. Second-sitting Rob Collier was actually faster, but penalty times played a big part in this class and Robertson took the win to easily secure the series. But there are no less than four others who could come next: Ingham and James Scott could pass Collier, and Paul Clarke could catch up. To coin a phrase, "it's not all over 'til the old guy sings..."

Tim and Laura Robertson had already bagged the junior titles, but last night Andrew Glover and Nicole van Oosterom made sure of the seconds. The final will be in the rabbit warren containing the Massey, Weltech and Wellington High School campi.

Event FOUR: Botanic Gardens - 21 Nov 06; conclusions updated 24 Nov

After four events, all five classes have clear leaders, though it's quite possible that a challenger who wins both the remaining races could equal or in one case dislodge the leader. Tim and Laura Robertson have unassailable leads in the junior classes.

But Lizzie Ingham, Ross Morrison and John Robertson have more work to do. Piret Klade and Bryn Davies could force the open class front-runners to share the lead. (This assumes Lizzie Ingham gets another "win" for planning, as expected. Morrison was credited with a winning score for organising this event.)

But veteran Malcolm Ingham could pass John Robertson! Though he retired hurt this week, he is quite capable of doing that! Attention will also focus on the second placings. If Davies doesn't catch Morrison will he at least pass Andrew McCarthy? While Nicole van Oosterom is fairly certain in the girls, Andrew Glover only has two points over Thomas Robinson, and even Peter van O could conceivably pass them both. The series isn't over until it's over!

Event THREE: Avalon Park - 16 Nov 06

With O-Max exactly halfway through, three classes have all but been sewn up, with three wins out of three. Ross Morrison in the open men, Laura and Tim Robertson in the school categories. And its not through lack of numbers - attendance is just half a person behind last year's record level. These guys are hot! Lizzie Ingham gained a second win in the open women to draw ahead of Piret Klade; while Malcolm Ingham's veteran victory brings him up behind the consistent James Scott and John Robertson who gets a planner bonus.

Turbulent weather during the day paused for the runners, but undoubtedly kept white/yellow orienteers away. Andrew McCarthy concocted yet another course layout on Avalon Park, a regular O-Max venue and possibly OHV's most-used map. A two-loop micr-o centred on a pivot in the childrens' playground started things off, before a leg over the bridge to a remote pivot in Belmont Domain. A new map was picked up there with two any-order loops, before the common return, which interestingly re-used some of the earlier controls. Very neat.

Event TWO: MacAlistair Park - 8 Nov 06

Ross Morrison once again finished just ahead of Andrew McCarthy over the 4km course covering playing fields and town belt. This course provided competitors with significantly more climb than the event last week, and required decisions by twice having to chose 3 out of four controls, half way round each of the two loops. The appearance of Malcom Ingham, who made short work of the course, pushed last weeks veteran winner (John Robertson) down to second place. The outstanding performance of the evening was the superb run put in by Timothy Robertson who was the fourth fastest on the course. He and sister Laura both cemented their leads in the schoolboy and schoolgirl classes respectively. Without Piret competing, Lizzie Ingham was able to take the title for the womens class, though as an organiser, Piret will collect series points equal to her best other score.

Event ONE: Silverstream Retreat 31 Oct 06

The Robertson family made a good start in the 2006 O-Max series by winning three of the categories - Tim and Laura the school classes and John the veterans. A strong turnout from young elite women prevented Anna from doing as well in the open. But Central Magic members should make the most of it before Tim and Laura move up - they were 10th and 11th outright!

Piret Klade and Ross Morrison won the open classes after close racing on the two-loop micr-o with common third loop. Lizzie Ingham led the women into the last loop but Klade got past somewhere in the tracks around the ex-WW2 hospital complex which is now the Silverstream Retreat. Amber Morrison who so decisively won at Labour weekend was third. Andrew McCarthy and Ross Morrison were 200m ahead of Bryn Davies and Bill Edwards after the two riverbank loops, when the course ducked under the Eastern Hutt Road and into the retreat. Morrison got ahead by over a minute by the time they came into view again - in fact the chasing pair nearly caught up with McCarthy, but the order remained the same.

The area was suggested by member Nic Gorman before taking up a DOC assignment in the McKenzie Country, and began the mapping. The retreat which has an interesting maze of old buildings on a plateau overlooking the Hutt River has more potential, and could host a permanent course since it is used for conferences and accommodation.
