P-Max and CSW Rogaine #3.5, Island Bay, 23 Jul 14

Course Planner

Time 2hrs. 100% dark. Crisp evening on the tail end of a stormy few days. Not too cold either. Max score 850. Participants 53.

Michael comments...
A great night after the stormy weather, and I hope the course achieved its objective of getting you into bush nav without going far off track. In orienteering this is the second navigation step out of four (yellow), but of course darkness increases the difficulty by a notch, so probably level three (orange).

This is different from other rogaines where you have easy controls and hard controls (a long way from a track or other handrail). Then you might have to ask yourselves, is this within our skills, or is it within our skills provided it isn't dark? But here we are aiming at those heading to the Sec Sch Rogaine Champs, or the equivalent adult beginner level.

I haven't checked your sums, this isn't a championship and on the average card I'm likely to misinterpret your writing. I've just done the lateness and solo calcs, if this means they've been done twice sing out. A couple of hints: I'm a fan of Inkjoy pens, they don't cost any more than Bic but write in the wet. Please give us your FULL names on the tear-off butts, we have them in case of emergency and we'd like to know exactly who the emergency is happening to. And lastly a lot of you are paying more than you need to, join up with an orienteering club and save $5 each time. Go to www.ohv.org.nz and follow the links to an online form, and stick the money in our bank. It's half price if you have never belonged to an orienteering club before.

PS there are more tracks out there to be found, I heard about a couple after I finalised the map. If you have any hints (anywhere in greater Wgtn) let me know, better still send me a sketch or GPS track. That's how our mapping improves.

P-Max and CSW Rogaine #3, Tinakori, 10 Jul 14

Course Planner assisted by Greg Thurlow.

Time 90 minutes. 100% dark. Pleasant evening with un-winter temperatures. Max score 1780. Participants 42.

The organiser comments..
This was intended to be a little step up but Tinakori turned out to be a BIG step with the number of controls off-track. Plus a stump in the bush is pretty hard in the dark. As with all Q&A events we are liberal about controls that you can't find after a few minutes searching, just write "claim" as the answer and count it in your total. If there are enough claims on a control, that suggests the control site wasn't within the normal range.

My suggestion to the boys who got bushed, and it applies to anyone: go back in the daylight. This isn't a championship, its navigation practice, and the ribbons will be there for a few days. They will be brought in eventually though so we won't put this map on the web, however P-Max 1 and 2 are there if you missed them, they mostly use permanent features as questions.

The next rogaine was intended to be a 3hr one on 23 July but the planner has eveporated. So we'll have a P-Max instead, probably a 2hr one around the Mt Albert/Island Bay area. There will be a bit of street navigation but we'll concentrate on the bush reserves, and again there will be off-track controls. You don't learn without being challenged! Then P-Max #4 is on 5 August, that's just before the SS Rogaine Champs and Great Forest Rogaine in Rotorua!

P-Max and CSW Rogaine #2, Te Aro, 25 Jun 14

Course Planner

Time 1 hour. 100% dark. Terrible forecast but all that eventuated was the wind. No rain. Temperature a balmy 16 degrees. Max score 355. Participants 33.

Michael comments..
Checked results. No's 26 and 27 scored at 30 points as per question sheet though this was unintended - copy and paste from last time! Would have tipped the balance towards the south-east, but if you didn't get to the west side (Polhill Reserve) I suggest that you go back sometime and explore. The light green patches are viable off-track routes if you're confident, and probably more routes have been opened up by the track-building activities. Don't ignore Holloway Road, with its heritage toilet block (#10) eclectic mix of housing, and Waimapihi Reserve at its very end (control #12).

Good to see more college teams. Remember the focus on college rogaining and the SS rogaine champs, so look past existing orienteers for those who like adventure in teams. Next P-max will be on Te Ahu Mairangi (Tinakori Hill).

Finally, though the weather was amazingly nice the forecast was not, and I would have expected everyone to be equipped for wet and cold. The "R" in Rogaine stands for "Rugged" and the "E" for "Endurance". OK these are intro events but get into the habit of bringing the standard safety gear, listed here. See you next time.

P-Max and CSW Rogaine #1, Kaukau, 10 Jun 14

Course Planner

Time 1 hour. 100% dark. Light rain all day but stopping just before the event. Supposed southerly wind but quite calm and warm in the bush. Max score 315 or 295 for CSW. 37 participants.

Michael comments..
Designed as a first night nav bush experience, this was all on tracks, and overlapped with Sunday's orienteering - but would still have been a step up for anyone new to it. Well done to college team Nicholas and Matthew who almost topped the board, beaten only by one other team. To those put off by the weather, it's really nice in the shelter of the bush, and we knocked out three controls that might have been a bit breezy. Night nav is fun! The next one will start at Central Park and take in town belt and Polhill Reserve.
