P-Max Afterwork Mini Rogaining Series

Didn't make these events? You can still do the courses. Download the map, grab some friends and head out for a trundle. If you have a GPS, record your track, and later compare it with the GPX file of the control locations. For the files go to the OHV Permanent Course page. For later events we are also posting the control location/question list.

Q-Max, Te Ahumairangi (Tinakori Hill), 31 Mar 11

Course Planner

Time 1 hour, with setting such that the top people can reach all controls. 100% daylight. Fine and warm. Max score 325. 92 participants.

Coordinator Michael Wood writes...

Great final for the last week of daylight saving, and thanks to many donating more than the suggested rates we've raised $581 for our friends in Christchurch. Maybe more if some who couldn't turn up have made a contribution via the bank account (its 010514 0135615-00 if you haven't done so yet, use reference Q-Max).

Thank you to everyone who helped. Glen Warner who set the course. The Colour Guy who printed the maps for nothing. Wellington OC who liaised with WCC for us and helped update our mapping. WCC who look after the hill, ranger Lem who opened the gate for us. Orienteering Hutt Valley who supplied plastic bags and cards. And you who went without the usual pizza.

It was the biggest P-Max style event this autumn and I think it's a great formula. It could be the Model T of orienteering, and if you think this is a relic of the past go back to 1908. Cars were complicated and expensive to produce. The T's simplicity and assembly line production overcame this. Like us it had only two gears: walk and run. It revolutionalised motoring.

But other types of orienteering are good too. Sunday's orienteering will provide training for experienced orienteers building up for the national champs. Next week there's a monthly 3-hour rogaine (with night navigation). Then there's "Brownie MTBO" which is a taste of orienteering on a bike. After that "club orienteering" which provides courses at 4 levels of difficulty so you can gain experience step by step. Find them all at the "coming events" via the OHV or WOC website, and please ask if you can't figure out some of the abbrvns!

And the Metlink City Safari on 15 May has just opened for entries! You can use public transport. Orienteer sitting down. See you soon!

PS: Might have got some teams wrong eg changes between the pre-reg names and on the night. Particularly Onslow College. We agree #23 was too far up the hill, if you haven't claimed it feel free to do so. It's easy to update the results. Four teams got all the controls (325 points) and three more got over 300 which is very close. Great result from Diane and Warwick Hill, they live on the edge of the map but this is very very good for walking.

P-Max #4 Pinehaven, 23 Mar 11

Course Planner

Time 1 hour, with setting such that the top people can reach all controls. 100% daylight. Fine and cool. Max score 295. 66 participants.

Coordinator Michael Wood writes...

The rain earlier in the day retreated into the hills and it became a nice evening to explore the bush around Pinehaven. The piece de resistance was a track called "Eagles Nest" with a 30-pointer on it, but many chose it just for fun. It led into Ecclesfield Reserve where there were more controls, and for those who could aspire to collecting them all, the curly streets of Pinehaven.

Three teams got the lot: Tim Robertson and Nich Hann in 52min, Bill Edwards 2.5min later, Michael Baughen and Daryl Burian 8min over time. Shamus Morrison and Simon T-S only missed one 5-pointer in their 64min run.

Great to see the walking category being supported. Also to see former OHV members Ross Mason who lives in Pinehaven and took part with his daughter; and Wayne Henessey who lives in Nelson now but was visiting course planner Pat. There were also 5 who took part in the 24hr rogaine champs at the weekend. Amazing how you forget the pain eh!

I must let Pat off the hook over the wrongly placed #27. As mapper I am always looking for improvements, I noticed when preparing the map that some streets weren't in their proper place compared to the aerial photo, I did some moving, and because the circles were on another layer they stayed behind! So my fault. As always with Q&A events, don't spend more than a few minutes searching then write down something else that is unique and carry on.

One more event like this to use the last week of daylight saving and also help our sister club in Christchurch. Thursday night next week, north end of Tinakori Hill. All trails, no streets. No pizza (unless you bring your own) so that everything can go to Chch. Starts half an hour earlier. Fill in the online form (or send me an email) 48 hours prior as usual, maps are ordered two days ahead of time.

P-Max #3 Melling, 10 Mar 11

Course Planner

Time 1 hour, with setting such that the top people can reach all controls. 100% daylight. Fine and warm. Max score 325. 83 participants.

Coordinator Michael Wood writes...

Great evening and 83 boy and girl racers hooned off from the riverside carpark after (de)merit points on both sides of the river. Especially in Jubilee Park which is a forgotten gem since the highway cut off access to it. Who knew about the grand old homestead?

Other control points were scattered between the Melling Railway Station and Hutt Valley HS, and east as far as Penrose St. Tim Robertson was the only one to get them all, though Michael Baughen and Daryl Burian came sooo close, finishing just a minute over. And since rogaining is a team sport we're going to put them at the top of the list! Well done all three of you.

John Bocock and his mates were the top cruisers (walkers), John lives at Paraparaumu and there's a whole new area with parks and walkways and beach to explore up there. We've been talking about how to use it, getting there after work is a bit problematic. Perhaps when they've got more capacity on the trains. We could issue the maps at Wellington and you could do your route planning on the way.

Great to see 14 scouts from Eastbourne, supervised by rogaine pioneer Mike Sheridan. And the Tonge family here until May from the UK. Next time we go back to Upper Hutt, the southern end at Pinehaven. Lots of pines as you might imagine. Maybe some bush tracks as well. Fill in the online form (or send me an email) 48 hours prior for the discount. Maps are ordered two days ahead of time.

P-Max #2 Moonshine, 22 Feb 11

Course Planner

Time 1 hour, with setting such that the top people can reach all controls. 100% daylight. Warm and wet. Max score 295. 45 participants.

Coordinator Michael Wood writes...

Some discomfort due fine drizzle but nothing to compare with what our friends in Christchurch are experiencing. Tim and John Robertson have won three City Safaris and turned their expertise to the area of Upper Hutt between Trentham Memorial Park and Whakatiki St. This includes the park of course with its rare stands of lowland forest, the riverbank, an intermediate school, a high school, and a street network with very few right angles.

Just three teams reached all 26 controls this time, with Bill Edwards fastest even with a 10% solo time penalty. Michael Baughen and Daryl Burian haven't been seen for several years since orienteering at Newlands College but can still remember how to navigate, and father and daughter Ross and Hazel Bidmead judged their finish within 1 single second.

Next week we return to Lower Hutt and we'll get off the flat into the Western Hills. Remember to fill in the online form (or send me an email) 48 hours prior for the discount. Maps are ordered two days ahead of time.

P-Max #1, Avalon, 9 Feb 11

Course Planner , Ian Harrison and Leonie Waayer

Time 1 hour, with setting such that the top people could reach all controls. 100% daylight. Fine evening with just a hint of that southerly change, but very pleasant. River flow 15cumecs (more on that later). Max score 295. 73 participants.

Coordinator Michael Wood writes...

This was the planning team's first course planning, and they did an extremely good job of it. Avalon Park a neat place to start, and they put 6 of the 26 controls on the other side of the river. With only one bridge this could be awkward, but the planners had checked out a crossing point near Fraser Park and this created a circuit for those prepared to get their feet wet. The rest of the controls were a mixture of riverbank and curly streets and of course in Avalon Park itself.

I wanted the fastest runner to get all the controls in about 40min, and Bryn Davies who is in the national orienteering squad was only just under that. The idea was that a greater number of people around my (slower) speed would have that slight possibility of getting them all, which makes it necessary to go for awkward low points early on. Normally, we have the luxury of simply discarding the awkward ones knowing that we can't get them all anyway. This system should let everyone get a greater proportion of the points!

Great turnout and I hope you enjoyed it and will be back for more. There's another flat one beside the river in Upper Hutt, then we've a got a couple with more bush and hills. Remember to fill in the online form (or send me an email) 48 hours prior for the cheap rates. I order the maps two days ahead of time to allow for any glitches. And note that this is a team sport. We're axing the "pay for your absent partner" for administrative convenience but we'll bring back the "take 10% off your score" that we apply to solos in other afterwork rogaines. If you don't have a team when you register just specify your team-mates as "TBA" and we'll suggest some hookups on the night.
