P-Max Afterwork Mini Rogaining Series

Didn't make these events? You can still do the courses. Download the map, grab some friends and head out for a trundle. For the files go to the OHV Permanent Course page. For recent events we have also posted the control location/question list.

P-Max #4, Belmont, 19 Mar 13

Course Planner with assistance on the night from Laura Daniel and Nicholas Hallinan. Time 1 hour, with the top people supposedly able to reach all the controls (but course planners are usually too ambitious!) 100% daylight but getting dim towards the end. Cool evening, though the recent rain is over we may still need to conserve water! Max score 295. 44 participants.

The coordinator writes...
Brian set a nice "game of three halves", with controls in Belmont (hill), Kelson (different hill), and on the flat. His name for the map, "A Speedy P" reflects the stream and its quite deep valley between Belmont and Kelson.

The Lightning Speed Robots (father and son Kelvin and Cameron Thiele) did a fantastic job outscoring everybody else including the winners from Oakleigh St. You should see how small Cameron is!

A nice ending to the series, and its getting a bit dim at 7:30 now. Next month, with daylight saving ended, we're starting the 3-hour rogaines which need a different level of preparedness. You'll need lights, warm gear, and the ability to navigate in the dark. Some of the controls will be harder. Running from 6-9 means starting 30min earlier, but there's no problem starting late or finishing early. School coaches may like to discuss a 2hr "school league" with us.

All the details - dates, areas, recommended gear, league rules - are at www.mapsport.co.nz/wellyrog See you there.

P-Max #3, Maungaraki, 6 Mar 13

Course Planner with assistance on the night from Cameron Thiele. Time 1 hour, with the top people supposedly able to reach all the controls (but course planners are usually too ambitious!) 100% daylight but getting dim in the bush towards the end. Beautiful evening. Max score 325. 52 participants. Kelvin writes...

The Oakleigh P-Max covered both stunning bush leading down to Korokoro dam, and the streets around part of Maungaraki. The route took participants to some fantastic lookout spots, on a gorgeous evening.

One of the more interesting clues was a rubber ducky in the middle of the lake behind the Korokoro dam. The lake is only small, but it is quite deceptive as it looks like it is about one foot deep - but the silt means you actually sink to at least twice this - and it is all mud. Some more enthusiastic particpants decided to jump off the dam to get to the check point - only to discover the silt was even deeper there. The question was: what word is written on the rubber ducky's stomach. The answer: "WET".

28 teams competed, which again contained a large number of school teams - great to see. Congratulations to Cameron and Simon from Onslow College, who scored 285 points, 10 ahead of Bill Edwards.

P-Max #2, Upper Hutt, 21 Feb 13

Course Planner with assistance from Penny Kane

Time 1 hour, with the top people able to reach all the controls in about half that. 100% daylight. Beautiful evening. Max score 154 (without the usual zero on the end of each score). 68 participants. Jamie writes...

The winner, by 1 minute, is William Power over Sue Eastwood and Graeme Silcock. Speed did not triumph on the day as Bill Edwards, like many others, thought there were three hinges. There were double that. The question was not how many pairs of hinges are there. Other points people missed were the University (Yale), the number of legs on the seat (4) and a feeling of (Euphoria). There was a bit of guessing going on, nothing like a little initiative. Good times though, I enjoyed planning it, and thanks to those who brought along all the kids, great to see lots of people out there having fun in Upper Hutt.

I hope people enjoyed the photo idea, perhaps one that others might like to use sometime when they don't have a mapper as determined as Mike.
