Santa brought presents for everyone at the OHV Christmas Rogaine.
The start of the Pencarrow Rogaine was a fantastic sight – 77 Bikers and 3 Runners heading south along Wellington’s east coast from Eastbourne in torrential rain and gale force winds. 80 participants in 39 teams braved the conditions. A few less hardy (or more sensible souls) decided to stay home – there were 117 pre registrations. You will be pleased to hear that all those that did not turn up received a full refund!
Arriving at the Pencarrow Lakes after being blown along the coast – competitors received the real map. From here about a third carried on on their bikes (taking a 10% penalty) while the others left their bikes and headed off on foot.
Control placement seemed to be pretty good as there were no complaints at the end.
However the norwest wind did not relent for the 6km journey back to the start for the four hour Saturday afternoon event – meaning many teams were late back. Two teams ran the whole way with Todd Oates commenting that he was running past bikers on the return journey.
The results were interesting with two biking teams scoring the highest gross points. Simon Kennett and John Randal top scoring at 2020 and Ant and Tom Bradshaw second at 1950. However once they were penalised 10% for using their Bikes around the Lakes block, they were relegated to 4th and 6th overall.
Winners on the day were Dave King and Mark Hearfield with 1910 and Anton Marsden and Gerry Whitehouse not far behind on 1850. First mixed (and third overall) was the ever present Debbie Mansfield and Steve Wagner on 1820. First women were Mary McBride and Hazel Bidmead on 1680.
However the performances of the day were the teams with children in them. The Gulley family had an 8 and 9 year old in their team. The Barnes family in three teams had four children between 9 and 15, and the Visser Fees had an 11 year old. The conditions at the start were atrocious and it really was a battle coming back into the gale force winds – very impressive that these guys and girls got out there and stuck with it. They helped very effectively with the devouring of 50 pizzas at the end - in the sun which had meantime come out!
Thanks to the Hutt Valley Mountain Bike Club for the use of their tent and Matt Smillie for marshalling. Special thanks are also due to Michael Wood for the superb job he does with our mapping. Every rogaine and MTBO event in Wellington, he is the one that spends hours pouring over the map making corrections, putting in the circles and producing the map for the organisers. The maps we use here in Wgtn are of an incredibly high standard – thanks to Michael’s efforts. We saw a good example of it today – map one being our old style topo map, and map two the super rogaine map produced by Michael for OHV.
Finally thanks to all 80 of you that got out there today. Club event organisers do it for the love of it. The best possible feedback we can receive is lots of keen people getting out there and having fun and competing on the event we put on.
