Houghton Valley 22 Nov 16

Course planner

Time 3 hours 5% dark. Weather breezy but a beautiful warm night. 95 participants

The webmaster reminds you about Strava www.strava.com. 8 teams have uploaded their routes and you can play the dots as they did the course. You need to put a route in yourself for this to work. Strava also calculates some running-oriented stats, interesting for us is that it does "time on the move" which could be an indication of puzzlement or otherwise!

Wilderest West 11 Oct 16

Course planner and Ann Kendon.

Time 3 hours 40% dark. Weather dry but windy night with 73 competitors. Everyone back by 9:16pm

The planners write:
Control 32 - 4 teams had trouble however 21 teams got the right answer; claims not allowed. The stoat box was about 15-20 meters along the trapping line.
Control 22 the Mail box is Red/Orange but 4 teams put down green; have allowed in case some colour blind people out there. Perhaps not a good colour to use in future questions
All the ribbons stayed in place and it sounded like people had a great time.

The winning walking route was 32,21,45,36,82,55,72,56,70,39,100,44,54,81,37,43,60,41,90,30,52,62,51,40,22
The winning running route included everything except 20,25,37,50,60

The webmaster reminds you about Strava www.strava.com. 8 teams have uploaded their routes (some teams had two GPS's going) and you can play the dots as they did the course. You need to put a route in yourself for this to work, from the zillions of records in its database it needs to work which were "near" you last night. You are ethically bound not to use your GPS for navigation, of course.

Results (Speedsters score added 13 Oct)

Course planner Andrew Begbie and Ian Harrison.

Time 3 hours 90% dark. Weather, fine warm night. Spring is really here! Revised comments 21 Sep plus some participant names fixed. Max score 2980 Participants 75, including a couple of juniors, great to see. All scores above 1,000 were checked. A few problem controls: # 34 (bright light therefore code not visible), #53 (incorrect house # provided), #59 (post/stake removed), #72 (ribbon missing) – claims awarded.

The mapper writes: The course included a 100-pointer on the Anne St Trig, a feature missing on our mapping until a week ago. Spotted in the distance, the planners couldn't find a way in, but trig locations are on the web, and land boundaries are on the web, and...

The webmaster writes: Its not OK to use a GPS to navigate in a rogaine, but it IS OK to record your track for looking at later. Could-have, should-have... And if you store your tracks in Strava, there's a nifty "Flybys" feature that finds all the tracks that are "near" yours and you can replay the dots across their map. At the time of writing there are 13 rogaine tracks there, and a couple of random commuters riding home. Fun!

Results L=late, S=solo. The mapper has no penalty this time, he tried to leave the nav to his team-mate. There's a tie in the walkers, which can't be resolved with 1-minute timing but the simple-minded web page can't handle ties:-))

Pinehaven 9 Aug 16

Course planner and

Time 3 hours 100% dark. Weather, fine clear night, beautiful surprise after rugged weather last weekend. Brisk temperatures, a bit slippery underfoot esp where logging machinery has been working. Max score 450 (1hr) 1490 (3hrs). Participants 74. Pat writes...

After days of rain, the clouds disappeared, and the moon and stars were visible. 47 people took part in the 3-hour rogaine and 27 in the 1-hour. Most of the 3-hour rogainers found the 100 point giant rata that locals are pushing hard to get protected. The 1-hour rogainers consumed the hot soup and discussed whether the bridge had an extra X.

With Jamie and co unexpectedly finishing early, the Navigationally Challenged were unchallenged in their supremacy, visiting all but 8 of the 39 controls, totalling 1290 points, and covering 20km in the 3 hours. A superb effort.

There was plenty to interest rogainers – steep tracks of pine needles, contour tracks, pleasant long runs on undulating forest roads, and an occasional recently (yesterday) felled pine tree.

One of our 3-hour competitors was visiting from Christchurch, and became an honorary “icy ewe”. (The secretary of the NZ Rogaine Assn.) A number of newcomers from Pinehaven took part in the three-hour event and especially the one-hour event. The track at the end of Elmslie Rd (control 51) passes though land owned by OHV orienteer Gavin Scott. He is happy for people to access the (steep) forest track through his property. The pine forests and forest roads belong to the Guildford Timber Company. The Company is happy for the public to go on their land provided they are careful to avoid forest management activities (especially tree felling !).

Scores recorded here have been checked. In several cases the final score differs from the one you totted up on the night. A bonus 10-points was awarded to two teams who spotted the additional X under the bridge at control 10. We did not subtract the usual 10% for solo efforts in the 1-hour rogaine.

Mt Victoria 12 July 16

Course planner and Lara Shepherd.

Time 3 hours 100% dark. Weather, beautiful still evening, crisp but not cold. 100 participants. Max score 1610. Results with checking of top 5 teams in each category. Leon and Lara write...

Big turnout with 100 people in 43 teams. Apologies for the slow start. About 1/3 of people were not pre-registered; hence the shortage of maps and delay. If you’re a club member and pre-registered for an event, the cost is only $10 per person, and we’d prefer to take that from you rather than $20.

We were fortunate with the mild weather. The four ‘Roman’ columns of Control 23 were apparently obscured by scaffolding; points awarded to those making a claim. The leading teams nearly cleaned us out, with the total points available being 1610. The top five running teams each got all of the controls worth 60 or more points.

Among the running teams, the most popular control was 39 visited by 22 teams (followed by 100 and 30, each visited by 21 teams); the least popular control was 20 which only one team scored correctly (while only five and six teams visited controls 38 and 40, respectively). We have verified the answers and addition for the top five places in each of the walking and running categories. With times recorded to the minute there are a couple of ties, the simple-minded web page doesn't handle this so we've shown those with "Equal" in brackets. Where the finish time is different the first back gets the nod.

Miramar 14 Apr 16

Course planners Paul Tryon and Chris Hay, who made a great job of planning their first rogaine, especially getting permission for several parcels of land at the north end. Tim writes...

It was a lovely clear evening in Miramar for the first 3 hour rogaine of the year. Twenty four teams came out to explore the highlights of the peninsula. Most teams chose to explore the northern end of the peninsula with at least 12 teams finding the 100 point control. Only one team visited the 80 point controls at the southern end. The most popular control was under the climbing frame at Scorching Bay. Some teams had trouble with a fallen log at control 45. Thanks for coming and I hope you all enjoyed the course, Tim, Chris and Paul.

Time 3 hours 100% dark. 45 participants est. Confirmed results, minor updates 19 Apr. See also the P-Max results for the 1-hour mini rogaine that ran at the same time.
