Big thanks to Russell for once again giving access to Otari Farm, not usually open to the public. The course went west to British Peak (the high peak close to control 44) and a little beyond, with plenty of options to explore new country. Most interesting answers were for control 42 - the correct answer was black bait station. Also the farmer must have re-hung the gate at control 43 since we set the course over the last month. And for the townies amongst you, a taranaki gate is a gate made with fencing wire and wooden battens (you can google an image of one). Thank you all for coming out, it sounded like most of you enjoyed the course.

Remember Pre-registration closes 48 hours before an event. The computer will still take your details but the webmaster will have already passed on the names to the planners and the mapper.

A tremendous turnout, does that suggest that distance from downtown Wellington is a myth?? Good pre-registrations in spite of a little confusion, here's a reminder. We have a website for rogaining round Wellington and that hasn't changed. It's at www.mapsport.co.nz/wellyrog. It's got general info, results, link to pre-registration and joining OHV, and a brief list. But deliberately no starting info. It does link to a CALENDAR though.

We (all orienteering clubs in NZ) use a common calendar website - brief details including starting time and place. For many years we have used the Maptalk calendar. (Maptalk, not Mapsport.) We're changing over to the new orienteering federation website and calendar. After parallel running, it's time to stop putting details on Maptalk. Starting details will now appear only on www.orienteering.org.nz. HTH.

Time 3 hours 90% dark. Clear crisp night with no wind. 44 participants.

Kelvin writes...
This months rogaine saw teams ascend the stunning Colonial Knob. This area has interesting bush around the foot, and dramatic open landscape higher up. The course then extended through Kenepuru, Linden and to Wilf Mexted reserve. Perfect conditions, with half an hour of twilight, still, and a little cold.

Most teams took on the imposing 458m climb up Colonial Knob. Nine teams were late back, obviously banking on a quick easy return to the finish line - which wasn't necessarily the case... One team attempted a short cut that saw their legs seriously attacked by blackberry - resulting in them getting stuck and being 30 minutes late. Maybe I am a psycho planner - but these stories is what makes it all worthwhile.

The webmaster adds...
A suggestion about saving money, join up with OHV (or any orienteering club) and save $5. The sub is a modest $25 and if you've never belonged to an orienteering club before, half of that! See "Register or Join" on the Wellyrog website. Pay the sub by bank transfer.

And of course pre-register to save even more! Reminder that this is two nights before the rogaine as we go to print the day before. Registering after this will appear to work but you may not be on the list given to the organiser:-))

Thanks to everyone for turning up, too bad the rain didn't wait till we'd finished but it could've been worse - eg Wednesday! Apologies for the errors, 14 ended up where 21 should've been on the map so the clue made no sense and 28 just seems wrong, must go back and check.

The consensus on the live scoring (by cellphone) was positive, no wet answer sheets to deal with has got to be a plus. ( and it's more interesting for the setter and the bar staff at 1841 watching you running around the course ). Just a few teething issues to iron out, like the lack of a finish code - Kelvin must have plans to go for the world record longest rogaine as he'd set the event up to finish next year!

Lastly special mention to Lauri Halonen (Team Lost Bearings), he must be the youngest person to have done any of my rogaines. He was out there for 2.5 hours, was even later past his bedtime waiting for some pi
