The orienteering you do when there's no orienteering

Usually, orienteering requires about an hour's prep for every hour's participation. So we're limited as to how many events we can put on. Here's a formula that gives us orienteering skills, and a run, while getting ready to take a turn planning an event. And it's close to home.

We meet at a nominated spot, having printed a map off the web. We put out 2 markers each and mark them on a master map. Someone joins the dots (long and short course options) and we run them. Collect up the markers and hive off to a cafe. Takes about 2 hours (not including coffee). Morning or afternoon, leaves the rest of the day free.

That's it. No entry fee, no timing, no results, no-one has to do anything before or after. (Well, put a map on the web, but we've got heaps of mapping. And there won't be a legend or fancy layout:-))

This is not a "series". It happens when someone spots a spare Sunday, chooses a spot, and puts it on the calendar. Simple as that. Read more about U-Max... Enquiries Ph 04 566 2645

ORIENTEERING ON FOOT: "involves finding your way through unfamiliar terrain using a map." Competitions are usually individual, but groups are welcome too. Checkpoints may have to be visited in a certain order, or a time limit is set. Courses can take anything from 10 minutes up, with an hour quite common.

ROGAINING: "a sport of long distance cross-country navigation", in which teams of two to five people visit as many checkpoints as they wish in a set time period. "Long" is anything up to 24hrs, but the skills can be practised over any period, such as one hour.
