WORLD ROGAINE CHAMPIONSHIP COMPASS OFFER (updated 8 Jun 10)

If you're coming from the northern hemisphere for the 2010 World Rogaining Championship you'll need a compass to suit New Zealand. Why? The earth's magnetism pulls one end of the needle down in the south, the other end in the north. So the little counterweight that ensures the needle swings freely has to be in a different place. Your northern compass will "stick" in NZ.

We'll be onsite at the champs with stock; but as we're competing too would prefer to get you set up in advance. Here's what we can do for you.

First, we would recommend the Silva Ranger 3. This is the most widely-used back-country compass in New Zealand. We carry other compasses for orienteering purposes but think that the extra costs may outweigh the benefits for a short-time visitor. (NB The Silva name is used in USA for other products, so please look carefully at this. Click on the picture to link to the Silva Sweden website for full details.)

We will pay for airmail delivery of a Silva Ranger 3 to a WRC9 participant anywhere in the world apart from NZ. This is partly covered by taking off the NZ sales tax since it is an export. So you get it in your hands before you leave home. And you can use it on the way - perhaps the 8-hour rogaine two weeks before the worlds, or the orienteering weekend one week before. See the NZ Maptalk Calendar. (Note - a NZ compass will be "sticky" in the northern hemisphere. It will work correctly in Australia and New Zealand.)

Plus for orders paid for by 20 Aug 2010 we'll take $3 off the price.

Now how does this all work? Our regular price is $50. Our up to 20 Aug price for WRC participants is $47. Payment in advance. And we'll airmail the compass to you. We can also send other equipment - and depending on the value and weight of the item postage may be less than you would think. New Zealanders you are also welcome to take advantage of the special price, but normal P&P applies.

How to Pay? You are welcome to send a cheque in NZ dollars, or arrange a bank transfer but you must cover fees at both ends. An easier way is by Visa or Mastercard. We don't have online shopping, so we suggest phoning us with the details (the answering service is secure) or splitting the details over two emails to reduce the risk of "electronic eavesdropping".

Now if you're too late for 20 August, here's what happens. The price on 21 Aug goes back to $50. We can still airmail to you if there's time. For most major cities that is within two weeks. And of course you can buy when you get to the event in New Zealand.

We have to say that these prices are correct at the time of writing, and we reserve the right to change if our costs (including postage) change. We already know that on 1 Oct the NZ sales tax (it is called GST) will increase by a couple of percent. We are a small shop operating mostly at orienteering events, we will do our best to estimate demand, but we will have a fixed amount of stock! Buying in advance will ensure you have a compass for the world championship.
