A couple of product announcements relevant to rogaining:
Rogaining book available again
The classic book "Rogaining" by the founders Neil and Rod Phillips is
now back in stock at the MAPsport Shop.
It's a hardback with coloured photos
and maps, section on New Zealand, and completely revised in 2000.
MAPsport also has the definitive "Organising a Rogaine" by Costigan,
although available from the IRF website you may well decide that it's
worth $25 for nice printing and binding instead of loose sheets.
New Headlamp from Silva
Silva have brought out a new headlamp which combines the output of a
halogen bulb with the frugality of LEDs (light emitting diodes). You use
the LEDs when you can (you can read a map or a book or potter round your
campsite) and you switch over to the 2.4w halogen when you're searching for
that control flag. It's not as powerful as the 10w beastie,
but in typical rogaine use, 2 and a bit lots of 4 AA batteries lasted through
the night. The biggie would have required carrying 2-3kg of D cells!
The Silva M2 is available from outdoor retailers including
the MAPsport Shop.
There's also a rechargeable model but it's twice the price and the
life of rechargeable batteries is less.
Declaration of Interest
Michael Wood who runs this website for the NZOF Rogaine
Committee also operates the MAPsport Shop. So there's a
"conflict of interest" when he wants to include an item about equipment
relevant to rogaining! MAPsport gets paid for the internet costs
but not for the time involved in maintaining the website.
