Bradshaw Miles In Front

Running solo, James Bradshaw posted the top score in the after-work shoestring rogaine last night on Makara Peak, next to the Wellington suburb of Karori. And he came back in with 30min of the 3-hour period yet to run! The 20-year-old orienteer represented NZ at the Junior World Orienteering Champs in Spain in July, and was the top kiwi in the classic distance.

Al Cross, who won the Wellington Arrow Adventure Race a month ago led his team of supposedly injured athletes to second place, ahead of Harriette Carr's trio.

There was a record entry for shoestring rogaines of 34, stretching the resources of organiser Dave King who had catered for 30. King put a huge amount of work into the event, including taping the 40 control sites (they are usually unmarked in a shoestring) and adapting a detailed 1:15,000 map previously prepared for mountain-bike orienteering. The preparation caused the event to start late, but finishers were rewarded with barbequed sausages!
