Compulsory breaks are used in Australia in the "12-in-24-hr" format, in which teams must stay at the hash-house for 12 out of the 24 hours. They can choose when they are out on the course. Another variation is used in Canterbury's Cyclic Saga: its a 2-day MTB rogaine with a compulsory overnight camp. The intervals between the competition times can add spice to the event: you see your rivals and catch up on your relative achievements. In Egmont's case, you will be able to drop your worst two scores.
Dates are on the events page. Ph 021 336 376 can tell you more, or visit the Egmont OC website.
