All Barr None

National Orienteering Squad member Stu Barr collected all the controls in tonight's shoestring rogaine in Wellington, finishing with 4 minutes to spare. James Bradshaw who won the last shoestring overlooked a 30-pointer close to the finish, and city councillor Andy Foster was third. Starting at Wilton Bush, Barr's route led through the Karori Cemetery (more difficult than you would think!), Tinakori Hill, Wadestown, up the Ngaio Gorge, through Ngaio/Khandallah and up Mt Kaukau, then back through Crofton Downs.

Ten "teams" scored 1000 or more out of the 1450 points available, but only two of these were genuine teams, the others running solo. The top mixed team was Gillian and Malcolm Ingham on 980, top women Fiona Clendon and Lynn with 660, while Lizzie Ingham and Rita Homes (14 and 16yrs) scored a remarkable 520.

In spite of the absence of local Southern Traverse participants who are close to heading for the South Island, there were 43 participants, a record for Wellington's low-key after-work rogaines. The events typically have no control markers and scoring is done on an honesty basis.

Results have been posted. The next Wellington shoestring rogaine will be on 27 Nov near Upper Hutt.
