The "shoestring" rogaines pioneered last year in the Wellington area are on again. Shoestring rogaines are run after work for 1-3 hours, and they don't have any control markers. Participants simply claim their points at the end on an honesty basis.
One-hour events were held on Mt Victoria and Tinakori Hill in September, using black-and-white copies of orienteering maps. Last night a 3-hour event was held on the Western Hills of Lower Hutt, using leftover colour maps from a MTB-Orienteering event earlier in the year. The same control sites were used, but the scoring system was re-jigged because one of the participants had done the MTBO event. The same map could be reused again with a different start point and a further modification of the point scores.
Ten people took part, with Dave King (596) winning over Steve Holden (558). The next one is planned for Tuesday 24 Oct, enquiries to Tony Gazley And after that at fortnightly intervals until the Epo-Challenge 12hr on Dec 9th.
