24hr Rogaine in Central Otago

The NZ Rogaine Assn has announced a 24hr rogaine to be held near Roxburgh in Central Otago next March. Although the Marlborough event came close, this will be the first full-length rogaine in NZ since the World Championship in Jan 2000.

The terrain is described as rolling spur-gully farmland, a mixture of grazed pasture and open tussock with a few forestry plantations. Altitude ranges from 80 to 1000m "with little flat country". Sounds ominous! But the organisers include Pete Squires and Bill Kennedy who are among the country's most experienced rogainers, so a good event is promised.

NZRA and the NZ Orienteering Federation's Rogaine Committee are hoping to agree that the event can carry "NZ Championship" status. There are a couple of issues yet to be solved, the main one being that the proposed date is the same as a major night-orienteering relay event at Middlemarch, not that far away. The other one is acceptance by NZRA and orienteering clubs of each others' members. NZOF has changed its requirement of club membership for championships, and in fact all rogaines held by orienteering clubs have been open to all.

There is information on the NZRA website but it is possible that some details may change.
