Every time there is a local Rogaine I hear from a number of people asking what it is all about. They hear the word navigation and say “I can’t do that” and then switch off. There are also a few keeners desperate to find out how to read a map and race! With the take off in Adventure Racing interest in learning how to navigate has increased!
So instead of telling people to go and join a club I have decided to bring the club to the people by co-ordinating some Rogaine Coaching in the lead-up to the Eastbourne Rogaine on 13 April.
The coaching will be offered by a team of experienced rogainers from the Hutt Valley Orienteering Club and other elite local rogainers lending a hand.
The format will be three after work sessions lasting 2-3 hours involving a bit of classroom stuff, some paper exercises and then a chance to practise what you learnt. Each week will build on the previous session. If you are already an experienced navigator but want to only find out about rogaines then attending the final session is fine.
The first session on Tuesday 19th March will be An Introduction to Navigation and will cover the basics of reading a map and using it with a compass in the field. Aimed at people with no idea on navigation.
Week 2 on Monday 25th March will be Navigation and Racing covering the basics of Orienteering. This is aimed at people who can read a map but have no Orienteering/Rogaining experience
Week 3 on Thursday 4th April will be Rogaines. Everything you want to know but have had no-one to ask. How to plan a route, tactics, execution of the plan etc. Learn from the experts.
Start time for each session will be 5.30 - venue to be confirmed. Cost is $3 per session to cover the cost of map printing - Free to Hutt Valley Orienteering Club members.
