Rogaining Returns to Rimutaka

Rimutaka 12/6hr Rogaine 13 Nov 04

Rimutaka Forest Park close to Wellington is a favourite venue for short tramps and mountain running. For years it was the scene of the "Trampers' Marathon", a race where you had to wear boots. The recent Wellington ARC Adventure race passed through, no doubt with lighter footwear!

Orienteering Hutt Valley's major rogaine this year will be in the park on 13 November. This will be the third rogaine there, following a 6hr in 1993 (its 4th rogaine and 5th ever in NZ) and a 12hr in 2000. If an extra shoestring event mooted for 13 Oct comes off, this will be the pioneering club's 35th rogaine!

The event will use the topo enlarged to 1:25,000. The track network is reasonably well represented on the map, and planner Mike Sheridan will have marked in additions. The area is covered with native bush with reasonable travel on the spurs. Height ranges from 20m to the 706m Mt McKerrow.

Start and finish are at the Catchpool picnic area on the Coast Road near Wainuiomata. Long course maps are available at 6am, with the competition running 7 to 7. Camping at Catchpool is not currently available due to storm damage, but out-of-towners can stay at Hutt Park Holiday Camp or Mike will put you in touch with locals who have offered accommodation.

Entries close 6 November. Download details and entry form (41K Word file) here.
