20 Sq.km Plenty for First Taranaki Rogaine

Billygoat Rogaine, 3 Feb 02

The deceptive nature of Taranaki's back country lulled many of the teams in our inaugural rogaine into planning much longer courses than they were able to achieve. We had selected a small area of 6.5 x 3 km (link to 75KB map) and were concerned that some teams would finish the course in under 6 hours, however the complex terrain and heat of the day were on our side.

We spent a lot of time selecting the control sites to provide multiple route choices, and we chose large objects as sites wherever possible. We also played around with the allocation of points for some time to ensure that the most obvious loops provided almost equal points.

In a departure from normal rogaine practice, we prepared this course to include use of GPS units as a training aid for the local Search & Rescue teams. Alan & Barbara entered to do just this and found that while a map and compass were vital to selecting a good route, the GPS made life a whole lot easier near the control site.

The team of Phil, Darren & Jukka were clear winners on the day, but avoided the slog to the trig for 100 points. The local lads (Ramesh & Mark) and the veteran team of Michael & Don made determined bids for maximum points by linking together the majority of high value sites. Results have been loaded. Some comments:

Out of interest, we have taken information from the intended routes of the top finishers, matched them up with the controls they visited, and come up with the route we think they took. How did your plan compare? Thanks for making our first rogaine a great success.
