Auckland Follows Suit, and Wellington Serves Up Pizzas

Short Rogaines springing up All Over

Along with three afterwork rogaines in Christchurch to raise funds for the Silva NZ Orienteering team, Auckland team members are also running a 3-hour rogaine to help their trip to Japan in September. Neil Kerrison and Rachel Smith are organising a rogaine near Helensville on 25 June. The area was used in the 1020 adventure race, and unlike the southern rogaine series it is a day event from 11am to 2pm. The event is supported by Green Coast, an Auckland outdoor retailer.

Meanwhile the pioneer of short rogaines Orienteering Hutt Valley kicked off its winter afterwork series last night with pizzas for all 65 competitors! From the early days when controls were not marked and may not even have been visited, the standard has risen so much that the old term "shoestring" is now seriously inappropriate. The club has contours for the entire greater Wellington area in the computer, and as events are held in different areas the track network and bush/open/private demarcations are being filled in. This makes for a map much superior to the topo, which is quite chancy in urban and near-urban areas.

Strictly speaking the winter series doesn't fulfill the NZ Orienteering Federation definition for a rogaine, which has a minimum duration of 3 hours. We've used this definition in the past to compile stats and announce milestones such as the 100th rogaine. Likewise the Canterbury Uni T'Walk doesn't qualify as a rogaine because the order of visiting controls is fixed. So while listing the results of the 2hr winter rogaines it will be noted as a "mini-rogaine".
