Forne NZ Champion Again

2005 NZ Rogaine Champs, 26/27 Feb, Middlemarch

Chris Forne won the NZ Rogaine Championship for the second year on the trot, this time with fellow-orienteer and top adventure racer Aaron Prince. They were 200 points ahead of Keith Murray (who won in 2003), Martin Lukes and Angus Jennings.

The terrain was the treeless, rock-studded landscape of the Middlemarch basin, an hour inland from Dunedin and far enough to share the dry landscape of Central Otago. Tributaries of the Taieri River cut gorges up to 100m deep into the mainly flat terrain; but it was the lack of relief which created most of the navigational challenge, particularly at night. The planner was Bob Cunninghame.

The other notable feature was the NZ-built electronic control system, put together by controller and electrical engineer Pete Squires. It worked a treat. So did the weather - reasonably but not excessively hot during the daylight hours and very pleasant throughout the night.
