Tough Championship at Wairamarama

6/7 Mar 04

Alternating 200m ridges many with limestone cliffs, and river flats soggy from the recent rain and the stomping of cows, made the going tough in the NZ Rogaine Championship. The country's fifth 24hr event was run by Auckland OC at Wairamarama south of the Waikato River mouth, on farmland with some bush and many dramatic limestone outcrops.

Outright winners were Chris Forne and Phil Novis from Christchurch, 260 points ahead of adventure racer-turned-orienteer Hamish Goodwin (president of HBOC) and George Christison, winner of this year's Coast to Coast, and just last weekend Course 1 of the Kaweka Challenge! Dave King and Greg Thurlow (OHV) were another 240 points back.

Controller Mark Copeland gives his comments here, final results have been posted, and Pete Squires gives his impressions on the NZRA website. And to show you what you missed, a typical shot of the terrain.
