The IOF has included the 4th World Rogaining Championships in its "World Marathon Orienteering Trophy Series" for 2000. This event will be run in Canterbury on 15-16 Jan, 2000. The other events in the series are a Raid (Mountain Marathon but not necessarily in mountainous terrain) in France in June, and an Orienteering Marathon (no requirement to carry equipment) in Slovenia in October.
This is a major step towards bringing rogaining and orienteering together. Although run by the same clubs and individuals in NZ, there is a separate International Rogaining Federation. And in Europe where there aren't many rogaines, people only know the mountain marathon format.
However the inclusion of a rogaine in next year's Marathon-O
Trophy series signals IOF recognition of the standards built
up over many years of rogaining, pioneered in Australia.
