Almost a Record at Cascades Rogaine

Lactic Turkey 6/3hr Rogaine, 2 Jul 05

Organisers Phil Wood and Shaun Collins were gobsmacked by the huge turnout for the Lactic Turkey Cascades Rogaine on Saturday - at 393 almost beating the record of 410 at the Canterbury World Championship event in 2000. The entry was so large that planned parking space was insufficient, and they operated a bus shuttle service from parking a few kilometres away!

Team Sportzhub - adventure racers Steve Knowles and Debbie Chambers - won the 6hr class after Gordon Blythen and Wayne Hodgetts finished 7min late. Di Michels a top veteran road and MTB cyclist and MTB-orienteer with Keri Devine were the top wopmen only 350 points behind Sportzhub. Veteran orienteers Pete Swanson and Guy Cory-Wright won the 3hr section even with a 5min penalty.

More details and the full results are on the Lactic Turkey website.

Expected soon on the website is the "Raceviewer" for the Cascades event. This lets you "play" the event for up to 5 teams at a time on a computer, watching the little dots working their way across a background of either the topo map or an aerial photo! You can see what it does on the Piha rogaine, or read more about the Racereviewer here. Expected soon is a new version which better approximates reality by estimating different uphill and downhill speeds, and of course incorporating actual data from electronic controls must be possible. Rogaining a spectator sport - you bet!
