We’re heading towards ‘Heights of Winter’ time again. Twelve hours of navigation and cross-country travel challenge in a scenic, seldom seen, lowland, hilly landscape in North Canterbury, less than an hour’s drive from Christchurch. This year, deeper than ever into winter but, given clear skies, a full moon! We’ll be operating over a smaller area than in the past, so our team of engineers will be aiming to sharpen-up the navigation challenge. Entry forms available from 30 April - try the Peninsula and Plains Orienteers website. Further information and entry forms from Grant Hunter or (03) 351-6369, or Jenny and Piers MacLaren, or (03) 313-3753. Entries strictly limited in number, and late entries will not be accepted this year. Your entry must be with us by Friday 22 June.
What is a rogaine?
A rogaine is a cross country endurance navigation event, for teams of 2 to 5, travelling on foot. Each team is given a 1:50,000 topographical map with about 40 check points marked on it. Teams collect points by visiting as many check points as possible in the 12 hours. The team with the most points wins. Each team chooses its own route - you decide which check points you will visit, and in which order. You can be as competitive or as social as you choose. Plan your course well. Rogaining is as much about careful route choice and navigation as it is about physical endurance.
