Murrays favoured for victory at Marlborough Rogaine

After enjoying the Marlborough Orienteering Club's 2002 rogaine so much (and winning with Martin Lukes) Keith Murray has returned to compete with Andrea and they are the hot pick to gain highest points and take first place at this Sunday’s 6-hour rogaine. They were convincing winners at the 2002 Heights of Winter Rogaine and Keith (along with team mate Aidan Craig) also recently won the NZ 2003 24Hr Rogaine Championships.

26 entries comprising 12 solos and 14 teams will line up for the 6-hour event and 8:00am start in what promises to be a challenging but fun event especially with experienced rogainer Barry Hope setting the course. Other entries that will be keenly contesting top placings will be Canterbury team Des and Duncan O’Regan (4th NZ 2003 24Hr Champs), Wellington team Greg Thurlow and Dave King (5th NZ 2003 24Hr Champs) and heading the local contingent will be leading adventure racer Dan Dollimore (solo), Alan Holdaway (solo), Susan King & Gillian McCloy, Lisa Kane & Ginny Wood and Marlborough Multisport Club President Kyle Christensen (Solo).

The 3-hour event has 7 entries with 4 solos, 3 teams and a 10:00am start. The team comprising leading NZ orienteers Jenni Adams and Carsten Jorgensen will be expected to convincingly take first place in spite of recovering from competing at the Nelson ½ Marathon the day before (Carsten being a hot contender). What better way to recover on their way home to Christchurch with a run around the hills? Local entries Ray Waters (solo) and team Julie Saul & Penny Dollimore are potential top 3 finishers.

This year’s event is being held to coincide with the conclusion of vintage (grape harvesting/wine making) and provide some preparation as a prelude to the Autumn Mists Challenge (17 May) and Heights of Winter (14 June) which a number of Marlborough Rogaine entrants are intending to compete. Results and race report will be posted week following the event.
