The highest scoring team was Alex, Hayden and Jessie, though in keeping with the relaxed nature of the event we don't know their surnames, or even whether they were on foot or wheel! Michael and Tony Young were the planners for their first time.
Rogaining began in New Zealand in 1991 with a 4-hour event run by Orienteering Hutt Valley in Belmont Regional Park. It was won by Warwick and Peter Hill, with Janet Dobbie and Leo Homes making a great showing for second. Since then over half of NZ's 19 orienteering clubs have run rogaines, and sporting entrepreneurs and a rogaining association operate in some parts of the country.
And the number of events is snowballing: it took 9 years for the first 25, 29 months for the second 25, and the latest 25 have come up in just 15 months. A key factor has been the development of "shoestring" or other low-key short events which enable rogaines to be put on without huge effort, and provide training for the larger events. Check out the complete sets of NZ rogaine results on the RogaineNZ results page.
And looking ahead, Orienteering Hutt Valley has just published its rogaine programme for the year, which will include a training course consisting of both theoretical and practical session. It also plans to run a daytime urban rogaine (which would be its 30th) to trial some new concepts, several afterwork shoestring events, a 3/6hr event and a 6/12hr event. Check out the calendar on the RogaineNZ events page.
