The Wellington MTB-Orienteering series of four events is now confirmed. They will take place in May, June, July and August.
The series will conclude with the Wellington MTBO Championships at Waitarere Forest, on the "Sandy Trax" map which was NZ's first map made specifically for MTBO in 1998. The maze of trail-bike and walking trails in addition to the forest roads make this an ideal area.
This will be preceded by events at Whitby Forest, Tunnel Gully and St Pats Forest, all well-known to MTBers. Mapping to show the ridability of all the tracks is know under way by professional orienteering mapper Michael Wood. The maps will be drawn by computer and laser printed direct from the file.
Key people behind the events are Michael and Brent Hoy, well-known for his MTB races under the "Muddy Trails" banner. They are both members of the Hutt Valley Orienteering Club, which has a name for pioneering new types of orienteering, including extra long (rogaining), extra short (O-Max) and now MTB-Orienteering. There will be three courses you can choose from, and results for the series will be accumulated in 8 classes.
