The Wellington MTBO Series for 2003 is shaping up. It will start on 5 April at St Pats Forest Silverstream, followed 4 weeks later with an event at Waitarere Forest. At both of these events there will be a mapreading training session immediately prior so that new bikers can gain skills from the old hands. The details are:
The events will take place on the first Saturday of each month this year, to avoid the various statutory holidays. The series will run April-July (other dates 7 June and 5 July), with a Wellington Championship set down for August 2/3.
The 2003 NZ Championship planned for early September is now unlikely to be held at Rotorua as hoped, with the small club there unable to muster the resources. The NZOF MTBO committee is scratching its head over this one, but it is known that MTBO will be included in the Australia-NZ orienteering challenge being held in late September in Victoria. The MTBO is set down for 29 Sep, in the same part of Victoria where the 2004 World Champs are expected to be held. Michael Wood is liaising with Australian contacts for access to MTBO areas for the week prior, starting with a low-key event on 21 Sep. The foot-orienteering part of the challenge runs from 25 Sep to 5 Oct.
