France has been given the honour of holding the first World Championship in MTB-orienteering, next year 2002. A time and place have not been forthcoming, and rumour has it that the intended forest blew down in a gale, and finding another was complicated by sponsorship considerations.
At last we have something. Still only rumour, but it says that the time will be the first week in July, and the place will be near Geneva.
The format is not known yet, but possibly an elite section with a limited number of places per country, and a veterans age-group section with entry to all-comers. NZ isn't able to support its elite foot-orienteers all that well, so there is not likely to be more than token financial support for NZ riders. But anyone interested in being there would gather a lot of information for the sport here, to prevent us from developing on a tangent to the rest of the world.
If you are at all interested, please contact Andy Clayton who is the Convenor of the federation's MTBO Committee.
