MTBO Squad Focussed
Criteria Established
After the 2002 NZ Champs a New Zealand MTBO Squad was established to work towards the
2004 World Champs in Australia. It was open to all, with the expectation that criteria would
eventually be introduced. This has now happened, a new "leaner" squad has been named,
and others moved to an "interested" list.
The new squad consists of:
- Kelly Fogden, OHV (added 11 June)
- Marquita Gelderman, NWOC (added 21 Mar)
- Claire Heppenstall, PAPO
- Diane Michels, NWOC
- Victoria Pike, NWOC (added 18 May)
- Christina Renhart, PAPO
- Darren Ashmore, TOC (added 2 Apr)
- Claude Dabaliz, AOC (added 26 May)
- Stuart Lynch, NWOC
- Andy Rhodes, PAPO
- Craig Starnes, OHV (added 19 Mar)
- Darryl Taylor, HBOC (added 2 Apr)
- Phil Wood, NWOC
There are a number of promising riders who don't yet have performances to evaluate, or
who have been unable to commit themselves at this time. Michael Wood, Squad Manager,
says that as long as the squad is a manageable size, new members can be added as they fulfill the
criteria. The criteria are:
- Current member of an orienteering club
- If selected, prepared to travel to Australia for the World Champs
and the prior training camp.
- Ability to ride within 150% of the time of the top
Australian rider. This may be evaluated indirectly against those who
have already ridden in major events with Australian participation.
Michael also maintains an "interested" list for those who have hopes for the team
but don't meet the criteria yet, are interested in helping the team, or are interested
in the public events that will happen at the same time. Anyone can ride in these
public events which will cater for juniors and veterans. The World Championship itself is
solely for open men and women. Details of the events are on the
Australian MTBO website.
If you are interested in either representing New Zealand, helping the NZ team, or
attending the public events in Australia, please contact
Michael.
