Australia-New Zealand Challenge

NSW, Oct-Nov 2007

The challenge part isn't signed and sealed yet, but regardless of that, if would like to improve at MTBO consider a trip to New South Wales from the 26th October till 4th November.

The NSW MTBO Champs (2 races) are on the weekend 27/28 Oct followed by the Aussie MTBO Champs (3 races) the following weekend with a week of training in between. The way these trips work is that the group hires one or more vans with the back row of seats removed; stays in holiday-park accommodation; and organises practises on maps through the local orienteers. Those who want to to bring partners and travel independently can join in too.

Rob Garden and his partner Marquita Gelderman have organised dozens of these trips for both foot-orienteers and MTBOers. He'll have some sample maps and more info on the 30th June. Rob estimates a cost for accommodation and internal travel to be about $600. Add on airfares+taxes and food. There will be both DIY cooks in the party and others who eat out.

The challenge will probably be based on the Aussie Champs events, and expressions of availability will soon be invited. In fact he needs indications of interest right now because as the travelling country we have to nominate which age classes are included (beyond the open men and open women). We can potentially contest M and W junior, open, 40+, 50+ and 60+ where the age is as at 31 Dec. So on a non-committing basis, if you are interested, right now. Rob's phone is 021 597 070. You won't have to go for the full week to be considered for the team if you can't spare the time. You will have to be a paid-up member of an orienteering club.
