A rogaine is a navigation based event for teams. You have a set time to score points by visiting locations shown on a map. The Cyclic Saga is the country's best-known MTB rogaine, but there are lots of rogaines for teams on foot.
The area for the Cyco Makarau Madness MTB Rogaine has an extensive network of gravel roads that will provide plenty of scope for route choice. Roads within the area are generally quiet, and allow an opportunity to explore a beautiful part of the Kaipara District. They include meandering riverside roads, winding hill climbs, and invigorating descents.
The organisers are passionate mountainbikers and experienced orienteers. Mark Lawson is a member of the national orienteering squad, while Thomas Reynolds (16) is in the development squad, but perhaps the more experienced mountainbiker.
Pre-entries are required by 3 Dec; we'll have an entry form here as soon as possible. On the day 6hr teams are issued with their maps at 0900 so they can plan their route, with riding from 1000 to 1600. 3hr teams get their maps at 1200 and ride from 1300 to 1600. There's a BBQ afterwards, and merit and spot prizes. To find Makarau travel north from Auckland to Kaukapakapa, then continue north on SH16 for 8km, turn right into Makarau Rd and follow it for 2km to the Makarau Hall.
