New Zealander Greg Barbour has won the Belgian MTB-Orienteering Championship!
While we don't know much about the quality of the field, the western European countries are strong in cycling generally, and it is likely there would have been a big representation from France, one of the pioneers of MTBO.
Barbour reports:
I am learning all the time to control the speed better and things went well on Saturday with only small mistakes. I won by 5 mins. There were about 100 competitors at the competition.
It is interesting that I did 30 k in 2 hrs 23 a rate of 4.57 mins/km. On the type of area I was on this is about the same speed I could foot orienteer so it would be an interesting competition of foot vs bike.
It is probably more likely I will go to France for World Cup. I hear Bulgaria is World Champs MTB O next year? (Possible change from France.)
PS More about Barbour: with an Australian partner he won the last World Rogaining Championship (24-hour orienteering, yes that's through the night) held in Canterbury, New Zealand in Jan 2000. What we need for this man is an orienteering triathlon!
