Hawkes Bay Up and Riding
Te Mata Peak and Eskdale, 14/15 May 05
"Up and Running" they usually say but that's not appropriate for MTB-Orienteering.
Hawkes Bay's first MTBO attracted 60 people to one or both events at
the weekend, including Andrew Bott who was a solo 12hr rider in the Cateye
Moonride at Rotorua. Bott won the 20km Course 1 on Sunday at Eskdale MTB Park.
Saturday's event was won by Darryl Taylor, who was second on Sunday. Top women were
Lyn Halliwell (Sat) and Marquita Gelderman (Sun). Gelderman, also a NZ MTBO rep
drove from Auckland for the events. Several travelled from Wellington as well.
Carl Larsen, secretary of the Hawkes Bay MTB Club was impressed by the HB orienteers
who set, organised and ran the two events at Te Mata Peak and Eskdale. The driving
(riding?) force was Darryl Taylor, member of the NZ team at the MTBO Worlds last year,
and shortly off to Europe to take part in the next one! Larsen hopes there will be
more events in the Hawkes Bay in future.
