The weather forecast predicted rain, and they were right with steady drizzle starting around 11am and continuing throughout the day, but this did not deter the 90 competitors who turned up for the event at Waitarere on Sunday. Well done in particular to those from Hawkes Bay who came down for the event. Despite being wet the feedback from the participants was positive and a thank you to all those who came and said thanks to the organizers.
I suspect that this will be the last event to be held on the Wanda map for a while, as logging operations cut into more and more of the map and the farmlands get levelled to allow the big irrigators to operate. The farmer was reluctant to turn off the electric fences on the farmland after a bad experience with previous land users (not orienteers), so we constructed some insulated crossing points on those fences which were hard to cross, and these were well received by competitors.
I was a bit worried about the white and yellow courses as the tracks were a bit faint and hard to follow in parts but all these competitors found all controls with no missed punches, so well done to you guys. Thanks to Rayonier for their permission to use the forest, and to the Easton family for the use of the farmland.
