Big climbs and big distances mean the course proved to be challenging, probably too big for a 6 hour event – taking more than a day to set out the whole course on my quad bike was a bit of a clue, 43% of teams incurring time penalties proved it.
The top scoring team of Al Cross, Jerome Sheppard and Jill Westenra worked out a route covering a good proportion of the higher scoring controls, avoided excessive climbing and got back within the 6 hours – what it’s all about at the end of the day.
Two ideas were trialed in the rogaine, one worked very well while the other is a work in progress at the moment. The ‘Never Tear’ paper lived up to that part of it’s name, what they left out was the ‘Never Stick’ feature (for the ink). Hopefully it’s curable by fine tuning the printing process.
The electronic punches and tags all functioned perfectly on the day however adjustments were needed to the scores reported on the day due to the problems with incomplete tag erasure prior to the event. With more familiarity with the software and better computer hardware immediate team score summaries at the finish are possible.
Thanks to the 109 competitors who turned up for respecting the landowners property and not getting injured or lost – makes getting access next time easier.
Results updated 9 Nov for Teahan and Dalton - giving them the 3hr win. Delay not deliberate, due to webmaster absence. 6-Hour Course L=lateness, C=claimed
Webmaster's comments. OHV ran a 12/6hr rogaine on virtually the same area 8 years ago, it was the the 12th rogaine in NZ, whereas this was the 131st. The winners of the 12hr section were Tony Gazley and Chris Tait, the 6hr Stephen Holden and Paul Fowler. There were a few others from that rogaine who were there on Saturday, including Alan Lowrie (who did some of the question-gathering), Dorothy Kane and Julia Fraser. The results are on the rogaine website but are incomplete.
In this latest rogaine you experienced some features as a rehearsal for the 24hr event in February, and it's important to remember that our afterwork rogaines won't necessarily have these:-)) I'm sure that you won't be expecting electronic "clippers" at the afterworks, but the other unusual thing on Saturday was a control vetting process. Tony Gazley visited all the control sites that Mark had chosen, and may well have altered some. This independant check does not happen for afterwork events. They create a lot of entertainment with the least amount of work.
I have reformatted the results into overall order as per rogaine conventions, hope I haven't disturbed anything. Another rogaine rule (which will be in force at the 24hr) is that 30min lateness and you don't get a result:-(( For big events we follow the Australian rogaine rules, find them on the ARA Website.
