Weather fine with moderate winds, we didn't have to hold the tent down this time! 50 people.

Michael comments...
We predicted the hares might do 10min/km on this two-part course, designed as middle distance training for the nationals. All low visibility and sometimes slow, part of the orienteer's toolkit is to be able to tackle this methodically. A third of the controls were in a 300X300m rabbit warren of tracks created by a local resident, and this created different challenges.

10mpk was the right ballpark, with Magnus Bengtsson (who is usually some way from the top on fast running terrain) being best at 11.8, with Bill Edwards close behind.

We also suggested some would be over twice that k-rate, you can work this out from any set of results. Though you would think an experienced older orienteer should be able to get relatively closer to the young guns in this type of terrain, as pure speed can't be used. However orienteers within 2X the winning k-rate were teenagers Shamus Morrison and Matthew Turner, endurance athlete Greg Thurlow and the moderately experienced Pat van Berkel, and on the abbreviated course, Rob Molloy and Lisa Walker. Only 20% of the field was within the 2X ratio, 50% was outside 3X.

More practise is called for, you could do worse than take your map out there and set yourself a course. The reason for mapping it is to provide a tough training area, there's only so much you can learn on Avalon Park! Health and Safety warning though. There is no northern boundary to the area, it just gets steeper and greener. Take a whistle and tell someone where you're going. Maps from the undersigned.

The yellow and white courses from last year were re-run. A couple of nice little circuits

Red A 3.4km in two parts, with untimed walk between. The first part was about 1.2km, the second 2.2km. We thought it would be easy to subtract the walk but Murphy's Law applied. The computer adjusted itself to the end of daylight saving but we didn't reset the boxes:-(( The software didn't like some models of SI card, the data is in the computer somewhere but the standard reports including splits print won't include them. So with some fiddling here's at least the split between the two parts. We might be able to get Magnus' and Bill's breakdown somehow.
