A beautiful day greeted those who hadn't over-celebrated the All Blacks victory or
NZ's gold medal at the World Masters Orienteering Champs.
A tandem won for the second time in succession, and there is no doubt that two people
can overcome some of the problems a cyclist has juggling a map, question sheet and pencil.
Still, a good ride from Julian and Millie. The top solo was closer this time,
Michael Wood even finishing a few seconds ahead before a 3-minute cartographer's
handicap was added. Steve had a good ride too, after he came back to get another bike.
On the feet, Steve Knowles was awarded the A course prize, after watching the clock to
see whether last month's winner Chris Holden, starting late, would beat his time.
The prize having been duly awarded, Chris duly turned up 39 seconds later!
In the B course Royce Johnston showed that wisdom can at least partially make up for
lost youth, but there was not much in it. Even less between Peter Bakos and Anton
Erasmuson. And in the C course Gary Williams looked as though he could have run another
course, but the day belonged to the two juniors, Jonathan Huntingdon and Susan Lyon who
turned in excellent times.
And Jason van Dyk, planner last time, is still fighting off a sickness, but shows
that he knows the ropes. Thanks to the planner Philip Calvert and assistant Nic Gorman.
