Results of the SIXTH event of the 2005 Series
Botanical Gardens, 8 Dec 05
The final event in the 2005 O-Max series used electronic punching for the start,
finish and pivot control. Although there are some problems to solve before using
it for an entire O-Max course, it certainly added a pizzazz, and helped with the
time calculations. Planners set a two-loop micr-o from the sound shell
after plans to use the rose garden were not allowed. The two loops were followed by
a longer common loop which contained some good route choice; firstly over the ridge
with the Magpie Lawn on it, and then north towards the dell where the deep gully
leading up to the met office got in the way.
In spite of a blustery day which kept away the white/yellow punters, the usual suspects
turned up to settle the tightest final since the series began. The classes were won by
Bryn Davies, Gillian Ingham, Dave King, Andrew Glover (who thereby won the series) and
Laura Robertson, who leapfrogged into second place in the schoolgirls and no doubt
gave Lizzie Ingham a fright. She placed 8th outright, ahead of the top woman and the top
schoolboy, and only 5min behind national squad member Bryn Davies!
Provisional series winners were presented with sox from MAPsport.
And in keeping with ancient tradition, runners repaired to an nearby hostelry to reflect
on another series, the best attended yet.

Results of the FIFTH event of the 2005 Series
Stratton St, 30 Nov 05
The delightful valley of the Korokoro Stream at the Stratton St entrance to Belmont
Regional Park is rather narrow for orienteering, even with the side branch where
the track goes up to the trig. But awkward shapes have been the spur for innovative
course designs, and
solved it admirably. From the woolshed and initial pivot P, runners had a
variable number of "M" controls specified on their cards (mmmm....) on the way
to remote pivot Q at a big tree down the valley. (One of the M's was up-valley,
which led to dispersion straight away.)
At Q there was a two-loop micr-o making use of the branch valley and loop over
the toe of Middle Ridge, effectively the widest part of the map. Then on the way
back to P, the remaining M's had to be picked up. Thinking ahead from outset was
required to avoid too much zagging across the valley on the way out and
back. Very elegant.
Ross Morrison recovered from his uncharacteristic lapse of last week and was
three-quarters of a minute ahead of Bryn Davies and Andrew McCarthy, though Davies still
has a 1-point edge in the points. Veteran Dave King was
fourth and is tied with John Robertson, and schoolgirl Laura Robertson EIGHTH overall
and ahead of top woman Gillian Ingham. Brother Tim was the first boy.
In spite of being beaten by her daughter, and almost by her son,
Anna Robertson still leads the womens league.
Next week's final in the Botanical Gardens will use electronic punching for the pivot
control and start/finish, the first real use of Wellington OC's latest investment.

Results of the FOURTH event of the 2005 Series
Mount Victoria, 22 Nov 05
The Ruahine Street lawn is a great place to start an O-Max, in full view of airport
and afterwork traffic. And there is plenty of scope for tight orienteering with some
but not too much climb.
set a deceptively simple 3-loop micr-o, with the third loop common so it was
a head-to-head race - which indeed it was for the fastest time of the night between
Bryn Davies and Andrew McCarthy. Davies clipped the final pivot control one second ahead,
and maintained his lead to the finish. The other elites in the premium heat, Bill Edwards
and series leader Ross Morrison were way back. In fact the top three vets headed by
Malcolom Ingham were faster than Morrison.
Gilliam Ingham was the fastest woman, Lizzie Ingham the fastest girl, and Thomas
Robinson the fastest boy. Both the latter are the College-Sport Orienteers of the Year.
The entry was spiced by the presence of two Swedes. Asa Pahlen studied in Canterbury a
couple of years ago and is back for a visit. Per Forsberg is in town for an accounting
conference. He has the same name as Sweden's top orienteering race commentator. It was
also the first time Lucy Bocock has been seen at a local event in many a year; 15 years
ago she was an eager part of the junior ranks.

Results of the THIRD event of the 2005 Series
Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt, 17 Nov 05
The racing was hot and contested at the third omax race which included 2 regular
loops, then an alphabet soup layout of controls where all except five were taped
shut and had to be collected in the correct order, then onto the final common
loop.
The leading order changed slightly from other weeks due to the placing of the
final control which some orienteers called nasty, and had difficulty getting
to. This control was placed on a hiltop near the latest extension to the map.
The courses were slightly longer than previous events which lead to lengthened
times.
The courses were planned and set out by Peter Bakos

Results of the SECOND event of the 2005 Series
Central Park, 9 Nov 05
Unfortunately the glorious blue skies that had graced Wellington all day had
been replaced by cloud by the time we got underway, but the resulting slight
temperature drop did provide pleasant running conditions. Around 45 people people
ran various of the courses, with the O-Max course consisting of two fairly long
loops within Central Park, followed by a choice of two viable routes up to two
shorter loops up the hill at Tanera Park, and then the return to the start/finish
in the Central Park playground via the other sensible route.
Hopefully noone on the yellow course was too confused by the "twilight zone"
description for the control just off the edge of the map (88 / W on
the o-max course). I could have mapped that little area of grass, but leaving
it off the map seemed consistent with an O-Max philosophy of minimising work
and maximising crazy twists!
The courses were planned, set out, and timed by
with assistance on the night from Alan Horn, who set up the registration area
and took care of the white and yellow courses. So many thanks to Alan, and also
to Brett Taylor, who spent a few moments of his yellow course reinstating a
control that had gone walkabout.

Results of the FIRST event of the 2005 Series
Hikoikoi Reserve, 1 Nov 05
Gavin Scott ran into a low bridge in a former funpark tonight in the O-Max race
at Hikoikoi Reserve. The funpark contained a go-kart track with a low underpass.
The blow gave Gavin a couple of nasty cuts on his forehead, but he was able to
complete his course.
Bryn Davies set the fastest time of 18-28 on the 2-loop micr-o with remote
extra loop, 4-out-of-10 with false controls in the funpark and 5-out-of-6 on
the way home past the old boatsheds on the Hutt River. Top schoolgirl Lizzie
Ingham was 5th overall. The course was planned, set out, timed and commentated
by
A party of students from Taita College used the yellow course as part of their
preparation for the Hillary Challenge, an adventure race for college teams.
