About MTB-Orienteering

Orienteering is a sport for families and individuals of all ages. It involves finding your way through unfamiliar terrain using a map. Maps for orienteering on a bike show details of the roads and tracks: how easy the junctions are to spot and what the surface is like for riding. You can use this to choose the best route to reach the control points which make up the course.

MTBO map

It’s a highly competitive sport with international fixtures, and also a recreation which can be enjoyed close to home. The orienteering tradition is to provide a range of courses at the same time, for young and old, expert and novice, fit and unfit. Even at a championship. We’ve picked a forest with a lot of tracks and which is not regularly used by mountain-bikers. It is big enough to set courses of up to 2 hours for fit riders; but it has enough easy tracks for shorter courses.

Orienteering has been going in NZ for 30 years, but only for about 5 on mountainbikes. The 2-day Cyclic Saga on Banks Peninsula is NZ’s biggest event but the main centres have regular events of 1-2 hours.
