MTBO Rogaine

Orienteering Hutt Valley 15 Oct 05

The base in Lower Hutt's Andrews Avenue was a wind tunnel, but bikers said it was much better out there, especially those who chose controls in sheltered places like the Korokoro Stream. The MTBO 4 and 2hr rogaine was actually a re-run of the 2004 City Safari, the urban rogaine where public transport is allowed. 49 controls were scattered from Belmont Trig to the pylon road on the Eastern Hills, and from Petone Wharf to Silverstream bridge. A few no-bike areas were marked on the 1:25,000 map, but all the same controls were available. Maximum score was 1700.

The original event was run over 6 and 3 hours, todays variant (without benefit of bus and train travel) was 4 or 2 hours. As luck would have it, the 4hr biker winners, Team Pukeko, scored exactly the same as the 6hr runners last year (Al Cross and Nigel Corry). Pukekos consisted of Jill Ford, Jenny Visser, and Mike Fee. The best 2hr bikers, tandem riders John and Christine de Roo, scored 410, well ahead of the Angliss family last year (260). But a tandem does have a speed advantage over two or more individual riders, so lets go to second place: Team Opeless. Their score, 280. How close is that!
