Intermediate MTBO, Mt Victoria, 23 May 09

Wellington I'm proud of you! 140kmh southerly winds were predicted along with rain and we were expecting to ride our mountainbikes on a mountain albeit a little one. Incredibly 30 people turned up including kids and proceeded to ride one or both of the two courses. Clearly we had more trouble than they did, with timing taking second place to holding down the equipment. Everyone came back with a big grin (or was that the wind doing something funny to your faces?) And Mt Vic showed that it's easily capable of getting an hour out of the best of you.

Ride of the day (or should this be try of the match?) Shortly after starting John Randal came back waving a broken chain. He borrowed Simon Kennett's bike and shortly was back again with a flat tire...

Brownie MTBO, Lower Hutt, 26 Apr 09

19 riders turned out this morning in spite of a gloomy outlook, and only got the occasional shower. Tom Clarkson's intro course was nice and simple, in and out of some newly planted areas on the riverbank. For the longer course he went through the little streets of Alicetown, and into the maze of buildings which was once Hutt Valley Memorial Tech. Then through the golf course to a little complex of clubhouses at the eastern end of Jackson St and back alongside Te Mome Stream. Download the map here, its a 660kb pdf.

Michael Wood helped Tom put out the controls, and Graeme Silcock lent a tent and handled the subsequent drying out. Read about last year.

Brownie MTBO, Upper Hutt, 28 Mar 09

This year's first "Brownie" MTB-Orienteering event enjoyed a beautiful day and riders explored the riverbank up and downstream from the Moonshine Bridge. There were lots of young riders and it was good to see them making their own mapholders from the materials available.

The intro course included a nice little area of stockpiled rocks that you had to thread between; and a curly green "allowable route" in the grass which had been mowed to show the way. The long course went through the nice tracks in Bartons Bush, and between the building-mazes of Fergusson Intermediate and Upper Hutt College. You can download the map here, its a 680kb pdf.

Trevor Knowles, Magnus Bengtsson and Lisa Walker helped planners Gavin Scott and Michael Wood to coach the newcomers, and Julia Fraser helped collect the controls. Read about last year.
