Wellington MTBO Series 2006
From humble beginnings in 2000 the Wellington Series now has the luxury of picking and
choosing from a dozen venues. Seven have been selected for 2006, and a second
long-distance rogaine-style Akatarawa Attack is planned towards the end of the year.
The series will be on the fourth Saturday of the month from March to September;
except for July when lack of a planner caused us to cancel; and except for August when
it's a week earlier to avoid the World MTB Champs; and except for September when its
a week later to avoid deer hunters:-)) The best-laid plans...
If you haven't tried MTBO before download some general info
about how we do MTBO around Wellington.
The next and final series event is
on Saturday 30 Sep and will be in Waitarere Forest near Levin. Planner Dave King is using
the SOUTH block which we haven't been in for several years because of logging - but he has uncovered
many of the old tracks!
Here are the details:
- Riding: forest roads and single-track in pine forest on coastal sand dunes.
Logging and replanting has completely changed the outlook since we were last there 5 years
ago, so it's effectively a new area. Easy riding available on forest roads for friends
and family.
- Format: Fixed Order Timed Event.
- Course Lengths: 3 courses according to age and sex for the series; recreational riders
choose one of the 3 OR give yourself a time limit and get as much as you can.
- Start Time: Registration 12noon to 1pm. Starts 1-2pm, or from 12:30 if the course is ready.
- Start in Waitarere Beach Village - follow orienteering signs from SH1 north of Levin.
- Entry Fee: $20/$10, $5 discount for orienteering club members.
(Organising club Orienteering Hutt Valley has a half-price introductory subscription
only $22/$11.)
- Course planner Dave King.

Series Rules
- Entry: Enter on the day. Unless otherwise specified register 12:00 to 1:00,
start times between 1:00 and 2:00, or earlier if the course is ready. But variations
are frequent.
- Classes: Men and Women, subdivided into Junior (up to and including 18yrs),
Open, and Veteran (40 years plus). Age is as at 31 December.
- Events may be fixed-time score or fixed-order time events, according to the decision
of the planner. The recreational "competition" will always be a score event
available to individuals, pairs or groups or any age. We don't keep points for "Rec"
but small prizes may be awarded subjectively, especially for kids.
- Training. On some areas a short "try-it" course is possible; followed by the
points-carrying courses.
- Scoring:
- Winner's Time in class divided by Your Time, multiplied by 25.0
- For score events, Your Score divided by Winner's Score in class, times 25.0
- If a rider in a score event gets all the controls and finishes early,
they have their score factored up to the full time for the purpose of series points.
- To nearest one decimal place
- To reward those who put in this work, a score of "best other score" will be awarded
to up to two course planners.
- Best FOUR results out of SEVEN, so max possible is 100.0 For 2006 there will be SIX events,
best four still applies.
- Results: will be posted on the web, target within 24hrs. Access them through the
OHV website or the
MTBO website
