Graeme writes...
There are a number of differences between the provisional (from the score sheets) and final results. Often mistakes in the arithmetic but I have also taken off the points for any “claimed controls” as in every case there were a lot more teams that managed to find them. A number of people suggested control point 62 was more than the 20 metres from the bridge. Having nothing better to do at lunch time today I went up with my tape measure and the control is actually 17.5 metres from the bridge – 20 metres is a long way in a very rough steep streambed.

We were pleased to see every control got visited. The most popular control was No.25 (top of the rock) which 44 of the 51 teams visited, second was No.54 with 33 visits, next with 29 visits were controls No. 92 and No.101. My favourite part of the course was the area around 101 (Top Forks) so I was glad we managed to tempt a good number of you out there. The least visited control was No.75 with 3 visits and then Nos. 36, 46 & 55 with 4 visits – all towards the Wainui corner of the map.

We plan to leave the controls in place until the end of November, for anyone wanting a bit more practice before the world rogaine champs.

Sue and I had a great time exploring the area and discovering a number of tracks that we had not been on before. I hope we got all of you to go somewhere new.

Ross comments...
We had fun setting it and and a top score of 1300 out of 1700 indicates it was about the right number of controls/difficulty. A high quality map helps a lot.

Everyone who claimed 80 and 33 has been given them. The ribbon at 33 must have disappeared as it was quite obvious. 80 was probably in the wrong place and even if it was right, was too difficult. We also discovered that top scorers have claimed a control they didn't get (but they are still top!) I'm missing 3 answer sheets as you will see at the bottom of the list.

While I would love to have been competing on the course, the setting was probably better training. It certainly lets you concentrate on connecting the map with the ground.

Webmaster comments...
Mark did a tremendous job planning this event, right up to the day before when he went out and moved a ribbon which he had put on the wrong junction. 4 hours after the event finished he was off to the mountain! Mark has now checked the adding, but some teams may have included a couple of controls they felt were not in the right place, others may not have. Remember that these are training events, set by one person without checking, if you think you are in the right place don't spend more than about 5min then write down something unique about the place and carry on. If there's nothing unique just write "claim" and if lots of people do that then obviously the planner will accept it.

Another thing to remember especially if you haven't done these before is the sensible gear. We don't do a check, it's up to you. We've got some recommendations in the general Afterwork Rogaine Series description.

Mapper's note: If you didn't use the east side, the mapping in Porirua has only recently been "filled in" with detail and no doubt it could do with further work. But in the week before the event, Gordon Balfour did quite a lot of work around Baxters Knob and the new Aotea subdivision, which connects quite nicely with the Bothamley walkway. Likewise Redwood Bush at the south end of Tawa hadn't been used before.

Debbie comments...
Well despite the weather forecast predicting rain and wind, the night provided perfect conditions for the Korokoro Rogaine. Views from the top of the hills looking towards the harbour were stunning, especially for those teams that had time to stop and enjoy.

I hope everyone enjoyed this rogaine. Apologies to the teams that had to plan without the clue sheet, however we did manage to get some more before you started. We enjoyed setting on this map as it was an area we haven’t used much in the past and it’s amazing that, despite living in the area for a number of years, I found a lot more off road and bush tracks where I hadn’t been before. Also good to see the likes of Mike Sheridan back and running strongly although somewhat sore that night, and Jenny Cossey ‘moonbooting’ it around the course.

Well we’ve finally knocked Bill Edwards off his consistent first placing, - unfortunately self inflicted, as he lost his map somewhere near #100. Not quite sure what he did with the rest of his time as he still came in near the 3 hour mark. BUGGER!!! Congratulations to Bryn Davies and Piret Klade who raced around to get 1470 points, with Glen and Barryn just behind on 1430, and Jamie and Casper on 1420. Al and Jill were the second Mixed Team on 1230.

Mapper's note: the improved-topo mapping which rogaine and MTBO planners have helped develop started here on the western hills of Lower Hutt. Then we merged in the valley floor and the eastern hills. Then we did the same in Upper Hutt. Then Wellington. Then Porirua. Thanks guys. Kapiti awaits our attention...

Course Planners and

Time 3hrs, 100% dark. Weather fine and cool, no wind. The grass was crunchy. 71 participants.

There hasn't been an afterwork rogaine in Wellington for quite a while, as key people worked on other events. And it was a beauty. Clear and crisp, fantastic views over the harbour from the skyline and lots and lots of controls. A twist in the question sheet was the inclusion of three which were combinations of other answers - making these others potentially more valuable. Good thinking.

The top three were solos (even with the traditional 10% deducted.) Bill Edwards has hardly been beaten in one of these events - ever. Jamie Brigham-Watson (I'm guessing the surname here) is a good young orienteer, he was reserve for the junior world champs team that has just competed in Denmark. And Andy Foster has quite a running pedigree and this side of Wellington is his home patch.

Here's a bit more background. Bryn Davies and Piret Klade are a top orienteering couple, she's from Estonia and they met at a junior world orienteering champs. Bryn hails from Palmy but they are living in Lower Hutt. Liam and Rachel are likewise a multisport couple, it would be nice to say they met in an adventure race but I have no idea! They, and I think Glen Warner and Mark Rickard are not long back from the XPD adventure race in Oz, the one with the stinging trees for which the only treatment was hydrochloric acid. What a trip.
