Time 3hrs, 100% dark. Weather fine and cool, no wind. Ross writes...

Not since Bill Sutch's clandestine meeting with a Russian diplomat has the Aro Valley had so much attention at night. A great area of Wellington, the bush above Holloway Road is very passable. (And you can revisit it on the Winter Classic long orienteering/rogaine on Aug 2) The old masters Bill Edwards and Greg Thurlow were at the top, but uni student Jamie Brigham-Watson is right up there. We'll see more of this guy.

Main queries were over:
80 - almost certainly in the wrong place - given to anyone who hunted for it.
91 - Was always going to be hard - was in right place - right in the stream
41 - was there in the right place

Time 3hrs, 100% dark. Weather fine and cool, no wind. (There's some disagreement about the last item..) Liam writes...

Another good turnout for this popular destination - with 100 people heading out, and rabidly consuming the 30 pizzas supplied at the end. (This could be a record for an after-work rogaine- webmaster.) Comments varied from 'thankyou' to some things less complimentary.

62 was marked horribly wrongly, sorry about that, and some of the others may have been a bit more challenging than anticipated. Thanks to Wal, and Mike and Darren for going and looking for 100.

Feedback is appreciated on whether you thought that this approach of making some of the controls more testing was worthwhile - I'm guessing so from the number of people that seemed to go looking for the starred controls.

Winning Routes:

Hazel and Ross Bidmead (2nd): 61,48,52,72,53,91,80,4A,32,29,40,62,13,11. We started badly as we arrived late and didn’t have time to plan properly and the unusual balance of points made route choice even harder. The first controls were quite challenging to find and we spent the first hour thinking this was good training in how not to compete. So the result was a bit of a surprise. Still it was obviously a night for parent/daughter teams.

Time 3hrs with 2hr option, 100% dark. Weather cold with very fine drizzle, but little of the wind that has battered us recently. Jenny writes...

The weather was calm, the ground muddy, most controls were in the right place, although some gorse did cause some problems. The two hour option introduced many new people to the event, children and adult, and those who had to work late. My apologies for 42 and 27 clues being around the wrong way.

86 people attended the event, 39 entries were on the day and 9 pre-entries did not show. Please can people pre-enrol so we do not run out of maps which we did tonight. Thank you to the later-starting families for sharing maps as a result.

The Mapper writes...
The Jennies cleverly chose an east-west area which meant it cut ACROSS the predominant direction of Wellington's hills. And called it "Southern Bays" which brings up images of sandy beaches and palm trees:-))

The area included some favourites of mine. South Head (45-27-25) is steadily being criss-crossed by tracks through the wind-beaten brush, did you know there's a cottage at the top you can rent? Preston's Gully (between 47 and 63) is a former landfill, and marvellous track work and planting is transforming it. Pop over the hill and you're in the grounds of Tapu Te Ranga Marae. In the daylight the architecture is fascinating, sort of Maui meets Hundertwasser! Wonderful bush tracks too. Guess where I went tonight...
