A really bizarre feeling starting in downtown Wellington beside the pubbers,
and battling the traffic lights on the outward legs. Of course once in
Tinakori Hill or Ngaio Gorge the more usual rogaine atmosphere returned -
you could be miles from civilisation:-)) Great to return to the civilised
Norsewear shop for the traditional pizza and countup - they've really
changed from the old farm fleck image and have some great stuff.
Bill Edwards far out in front, but perhaps we should divide the score by the
wattage of the headlamp:-)) His route canvassed the spread-out southern controls,
over the top of Tinakori, down the Ngaio Gorge, up past the gun-pits to
Wadestown and then on a fading torch a go at 30 and 61 below Wadestown Rd.
With the help of streetlights he got the GA Library on the way in but
passed up on 40 points beside the motorway because he thought the number
was 14 not 44!

Graeme and Sue stepped in when the Haywards rogaine wasn't ready, dusting off
the event they ran last year. The original one was shortened because of atrocious
weather on the night and many of the controls hadn't even been visited; and with some
point value changes and a different start point - voila - a new rogaine!
Graeme writes...
I have now checked the results – only one change – Justin & Matt climb to
990 points and 15th place (Addition was wrong on the night).
Maximum possible score was 2820 – Liam & Andy managed just over half.
Every ones control visits are on this spreadsheet.
My plan of changing the points to attract everyone to the west end of the map
generally worked. (this end was hardly used last year). I think Liam was the
only one who covered similar areas in both events.
I was amazed that all controls got visited, several by only one team (all
at the eastern end of the map). Most of these by Andy Foster and Liam Drew.
They even managed to find control 24 that most teams looked for last year but
no one found – I did not move it.
Control funnies
- There appeared to be a bit of confusion at control 60 – a number of different
answers G1 to G3 – different tags but all on the right line except possibly
Barryn & Dave.
- Control 22 – the bridge had 12 posts and no battens when I visited it last
year– I assume something has changed – I didn’t intend to have you counting 80 items.
- Everyone that claimed control 69 was given it – someone removed the ribbon
I put out on Saturday.
Well done to the six teams that enjoyed the gut buster between control 64 &
47 – I got a bit of stick when I took the HV mountain bike club up there on
a Wednesday night ride last year. A number of the tracks on the east end of
the map are mountain bike legal as is the ridge track from Wainui Hill Road
summit to Lowry Trig and down the Rata Ridge track exiting at Stanley Street
(control 70) following the recent WRC review.
Thanks for coming and thanks for all arriving back on time - Graeme & Sue

65 rogainers including a heap of Upper Hutt College students enjoyed a warm evening
in the bush, streets and streams of Kelson. The course climbed the flanks of Boulder
Hill and also included Speedy's Stream (fantastic glow-worms!) and normally
unavailable bush between Kelson and Liverton Road.

With a lucky break between the northerly front and the southerly, an astonishing 57 people
were treated to a crisp evening with views across the strait to the snowclad Kaikouras.
Lots of the faces were new, welcome and hope you enjoyed it as we enjoyed planning.
The most common mistake was the phone no on Control 44 which should have been 389 6215.
Also there were 8 swings at Control 100, not 4 - 1 team incorrect, and Barbara Anderson
was the correct name for Control 101 (one person incorrect).

Andrew reviews "the WOT Rogaine"...
The weather came to the party with a dying southerly. 78 people turned up – luckily
no more as we only had 80 maps printed.
A few problems were encountered with some controls. No. 43 saw a lot of people counting
gates and stiles around the stock yards. The control was further north along the ridge
at an admittedly very faint intersection (we were assured by at least one team that it
was marked correctly on the map). We were feeling generous and credited anyone who had
obviously been along that part of the ridge with the points.
Interesting to see that Te Reo is alive and well with the Maori name for giant dragonfly
recorded by several teams as uropetala carovei. Equally interesting to see initiative
used to prove control No.36 had been visited – we now have a good collection of Kauri
leaves. There is a grove of these giants in that area – all planted at the same time
in 1937, but varying in girth from 10cms to 2m. (How about THIS piece of evidence? ...Webmaster)
The other area of confusion was over the 50 point bonus task. This task required
controls 12, 53 and 63 to all be visited and for the name of a prominent Otari-Wilton
person to be named using the 8 letters from those controls. Lord Cockayne was the
correct answer. Several teams were not credited with the bonus because one of the two
tasks had not been completed.
If you hadn’t heard Otari-Wilton’s Bush is celebrating 100yrs this year. For more info
