Jerome writes...

Great weather and a good crowd (90 Competitors) turned out for the St Pats Forest Rogaine on Tuesday 8 November. The course and event was part of the Hutt Valley Orienteering Club's Spring series and was put together by Team Norsewear (Rob, Jo, Al & Jerry) as part of the led up to the World Adventure Racing Championships being held in the Buller Region from 14 November 2005. We really appreciated the support and donations provided as part of the event.

Winners overall on the night were the dymanic mixed duo of Fluer Pawsley and Dean Ford with 620 points. Next was the mens team of Bill Martel and Simon Dearsley with 590 points, good to see Bill getting himself back into action after a long injury. In third was Bill Edwards who rocked around the course to pick up the highest raw score of 720 but due to a combination of lateness and individual penalities ended up with 578 points. 1st women was relative newby to the sport Nicole Ranger with 280 points. In the college teams race it was a battle between three Upper Hutt College Teams versus the sole but very large Taita College team, with Hutt College taking out the victory. We suspect some collusion between the Upper Hutt College teams as they all come in with the same score.

The event was also the first time a mix of MTB's and Runners did the race. General comment was that this worked well in place due to the nature of the tracks around the course and limited number of bikers However some MTB's did comment that it took them a while to realise they had to get off their bikes to find the checkpoints. First in the MTB section was the Adventure Racers Liam and Barry, although Steve Meeres only lost out due to the 10% time penalty for individual competitors. The aftermath sausages were well apreciated although a number will be still be seen in various stews and sandwches etc over coming days. On the checkpoint placement, out of all the checkpoints visited only CP 32 was not found by a competitor. We will revisit in the future to see if it was in the correct spot or removed.

Cheers Jerome

Karori and Much More, 13 Oct 05

Course Planners Paul Chaplow and Bill Brierley. Time 3hrs, 40% dark, weather fine and warm, the forecast showers didn't show:-)) Max score 4220, elevation range 340m.

Regulars got a shock when the maps were handed out - 95 controls covering not only Karori to the bus-turn but Wilton Bush and the Skyline Walkway, Tinakori Hill, Gardens, University and Brooklyn right up to Polhill! The usual planning method for top competitors - aiming for most of the controls - was not a goer, and winning score (Mark Hearfield and Andy Foster) was just 40% of max. Brothers Matt and James Flannery were next, though Bill Edwards was slightly in front before his solo penalty.

The next event is the Terawhiti rogaine on Saturday 29 Oct for which pre-entries are required by 23rd. The next afterwork one is Tue 8 Nov in St Pats Forest Silverstream.

Western Hills, 28 Sep 05

Course Planner Allan Stowell. Time 3hrs, 80% dark, weather fine and crisp following a southerly, max score 1600, elevation range 350m.

A nice course with well-positioned controls in the hill suburbs of Lower Hutt and extending into Belmont Regional Park. Allan Stowell used a mix of suburban control sites (number on the letterbox etc) and ribboned rural features. The map which began the rogaine mapping now covering several hundred square-k was able to support difficult but fair off-track controls such as knoll 92 on the way down to the Korokoro Dam. Surprisingly one third of the teams were back late, which shows the challenge of the gullied earthquake scarp. The Rudolf Steiner School bus garage provided a comfy site for the post-race sausages and post-mortem.

Bill Edwards overcame a late start and headlamp troubles to stay ahead of "The Usual Suspects" Debbie Julie and Glen; perhaps helped by living and training on the map, but then the suspects are also from Lower Hutt. Given that, the score of Wellingtonians Nigel Corry and Christie Smith was very good. Then there was a gap of nearly 200 points to the chasing pack, headed by Greg Thurlow. The next event is in and around Karori on Thursday 13 Oct

Miramar, 13 Sep 05

Some updates 15 Sep and 21 Sep. Course Planner assisted by Barryn Westfield. Time 3hrs, 90% dark, weather fine, warm and calm, max score 2350, elevation range 135m. Colin writes...

78 Hardy souls ventured out on a superb night to experience the Eastern Suburbs. The course ran full length of the peninsula and also included the tunnel under the airport runway through to controls in the industrial area of Kilbirnie.

One SNAFU saw us relocate the Miramar Physio one block from where it actually is - sorry about that - scores credited where I could work out if you had been there. If not, add on another 20 points to your score ! Contentious controls - 22 Lampost with 5 digit number, is marked halfway on the track from Kai-something-something Rd to Karaka Bay. Some (not many - 3 I think) went to the lamppost 4m off track S at the top of the stairs which is not really where its marked, the rest marked the correct number although I could see some had gone up, marked the 6 digit and then found the right one. 5 digit number was correct though. 82 warehouse lights - we gave this to most with varying numbers between 4 and 7. 101 - Lighthouse squares - we gave this to within 2/3 each side of the right number as its quite hard to see. 32 - Same as above

Hope you all had fun - welcome your feedback and comments.
