Avalon Antics

Orienteering Park Event, Lower Hutt

OHV, 20 Feb 08

A lovely summer evening for orienteering. It was wonderful to see lots of Avalon School families coming along to try out orienteering.

John Robertson planned 4 entry level courses ranging in length from 1.4 km to 3.8km. The most popular course being Course 1 which first timers Martin, Hamish & Ryan completed in the impressive time of 12.59. The first 2 girls in were Jessica Rea in 13.20 mins, chased along by her sister Megan in a time of 15.54 minutes - Kate Rea’s cousins look like they plan to uphold the family tradition of speedy orienteers. A mention must also be made of the Pringle family who having enjoyed Course 1 decided to continue on and collect all the other marked controls - a super effort for 3 first time participants.

A new twist on mountainbike orienteering evolved with 3 OHV club members doing Course 1 on their mountain bikes - with the added challenge of a memory test. The 3 cyclists were given a short time to memorise the 10 controls, before speeding off. Only 19 seconds separated the trio in the results! Perhaps we should try this improvisation again at the next orienteering event at Maidstone Park on the 6th March.
