Routes
Securify (1st overall 8hr)
61, 44, 43(north of the start, intention showed into 61 from the east and out to the west,
thru 44 then to 43 from the north - I puzzled over this route choice when putting out
those three - MJW), 52, 71, 21(Cleary's Rd), 11, 10,
20 (the motorcycle tracks off Puketiro Rd "backwards"), 30, 70, 40, 50 (Curtis Flat),
90, 41, 80 (Hydro Rd), 42, 60 (Pram Track, after a short weep at the bottom of Dopers !),
91 (that lovely single-track), 35 (start of the Epic), 25, 72 (the Valley View gums),
24, 34, 23, 13, 12 (5/6 of the Rallywoods controls), 32 (the allowable route in the pines)
and home. Compared with intention sheet, struck off an up/down to #81 (Rimu Rd);
didn't need possible shortcut home from #91, but the wider loop thru #92...82 (east side
of the map) was pulled back to return thru #25 and 72 instead. Finished with 18min spare.
Total distance 67Km (excluding some carrying) and a whopping 2966m
of ascent!
Makara Peak Mudslingers (1st overall 4hr)
44 (north from the start onto the ridge between
Clearys Rd and the Whakatiki River - don't know why we didn't pop over to 61),
52, 71 (from the north), 81 (Rimu Rd), 42
(Big-ring Boulevard meets the river), 80 (Hydro Rd), 41 and 90 (the almost flat track with
the tunnel of trees across towards Battle Hill), 50 (Curtis Flat), 40 (overlooking Battle Hill downhill), 70, 30
(Dicks Yard), and then home. Some urgency there as 20, 10 and especially
11 were very close to Puketiro Rd. Finished with 95sec spare:-)) We were very happy
with the direction around this loop, and felt it would have been much
slower (and the end more treacherous) in the other direction. The
singletrack down from 90 was stunning - we hadn't originally planned to do
it - we were going to go back up the ridge and down to 51? but had a lot
more time than we were expecting as we used a measured string for route-planning but
the second map was produced at 1:20,000 instead of the expected 25,000.
